YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team opened the 2017 season with a 1-1 draw against Illinois State University Friday, Aug. 18, at Scicluna Field. In all, the teams combined for 26 shots, but only managed to slot one home apiece.
Junior goalkeeper Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) led the defensive effort, finishing the game with three saves. On the other end of the pitch, sophomores Nicole Remedios (Ajax, Ontario-Archbishop Dennis O'Connor) and Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) paced EMU's attack, as Remedios notched the first assist of her career and McNeill netted the sixth goal of her career.
Eastern Michigan put on the pressure from the get-go, outshooting Illinois State, 5-4, in the first half. Despite a few early chances, the Eagles could not find the back of the net, leaving the game scoreless at halftime.
The Green and White capitalized on a free kick early in the second half, as Remedios stepped up to deliver the cross after EMU drew a foul inside its attacking third. Remedios sent a beauty of a cross to the back post where McNeill volleyed the ball into the back of the net.
McNeill's 49th minute strike gave Eastern a 1-nil edge, but ISU came right back 10 minutes later. Breaking through the Eagles' defense, ISU's Angel Krell scored on a shot from 10 yards out, evening the match at one all.
From there, EMU continued to create chances, but nine offsides calls kept the Eagles from gaining any significant momentum. Unable to find the go-ahead goal, the Eagles and Redbirds went to overtime, where Eastern held a 4-2 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corners.
Following a relatively quiet first overtime period, the Green and White turned it up a notch in the final 10 minutes, rattling off four shots, while holding the Redbirds without a shot. ISU's keeper was up to the task, making four saves to end the game tied, 1-1.
The Eagles return to action Sunday, Aug. 20, against University of Illinois-Chicago. Kickoff from Flames Field in Chicago, Ill. is set for 2 p.m.
