EMU Volleyball Earns 13th Straight AVCA Academic Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) – For the 13th consecutive season, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball program was recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for academic excellence with the AVCA Team Academic Award. The Green and White ended the 2016-17 academic year with a cumulative grade point average of 3.343.

Overall, the honor marks the 17th time in the program's history that EMU has earned the award. The Eagles posted the highest GPA in the nation during the 1997-98 season.

A record of 822 college and high school teams were recognized by the AVCA in 2016-17, shattering the previous year's total of 762 and sets a new all-time high for this award, including a total of 145 NCAA Division I women's programs. The AVCA recognizes volleyball programs across the country that maintain a team GPA of 3.30 and higher on a 4.0 scale.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

The AVCA Team Academic Award, celebrating its 25th year, is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients have increased every single year but two, while amassing a 532 team increase over the span of the last decade. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 822.
