Baseball Places 10 on the Academic All-MAC Team

EMU had the second-most honorees in the conference
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team landed 10 of its players on the 2017 Academic All-MAC team, the conference announced today, June 9. The Eagles had the second-most players honored, just one behind Kent State who had 11.
The 10 honored included senior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario, Bishop Macdonnell Catholic), senior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh), sophomore Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice), sophomore Drake Lubin (West Bloomfield, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), senior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra), redshirt senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)), sophomore John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge), sophomore Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern), senior Kevin Shul (Albuquerque, N.M.-Albuquerque Academy (College of Southern Nevada)), and junior Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern).
Williams earned the award for the second straight season, while Beaton, Delaplane, and Montgomery garnered the award for the third time in their storied EMU careers.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
Beaton was EMU's primary back end of the bullpen arm in 2017, serving as the team's closer. The senior finished third on EMU with a 4.45 ERA in 22 appearances, totaling 30.1 innings, while also notching four wins. The Guelph, Ontario native led the team with three saves, while striking out 24 batters and holding opponents to a .256 batting average. In conference only games, Beaton had a sterling 0.79 ERA in 11.1 innings, while also notching three of his wins. For his career, Beaton finished with eight saves, good for a tie for eighth on the all-time EMU list, while his 3.51 ERA is ninth all-time. He graduated in the spring with his degree in aviation management technology, finishing with a 3.49 GPA.
Delaplane wrapped up a stellar EMU career with a great 2017 campaign, finishing with First-Team All-MAC honors. The senior led EMU as the Friday starter, finishing with a team-best 3.27 ERA in 20 appearances, including 11 starts, totaling 85.1 innings. He finished with 92 strikeouts, the ninth most in a single season in EMU history, while finishing second on EMU with four wins. His ERA ranked fifth in the conference, while strikeouts were second. For his career, he finished with 210 punch-outs, becoming just the 11th EMU player to eclipse the 200-strikeout plateau, and finishing eighth all-time. He graduated in the spring with his degree in marketing, finishing with a 3.62 GPA.
Feldman, a sport management major with a 3.63 GPA, put together a solid sophomore campaign in 2017, totaling a 4.79 ERA in 19 appearances, including three starts, and 47 innings. The right-hander had 28 strikeouts, as well as two wins and two saves. He saved his best performance for last, throwing a complete game in the 9-1 win over Central Michigan in the MAC Tournament, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out five. His efforts earned him MAC All-Tournament Team honors.
Lubin commanded the Eagle outfield as the primary centerfielder in 2017. The righty bat finished with a .269 average in 47 games, including 29 hits and 17 RBIs. He was a threat on the base paths, stealing seven bags, while also giving reliable defense with only one error in 86 chances. He finished the season with six multi-RBI games, including a career-high four against Toledo, May 18. Lubin currently holds a 3.66 GPA in business administration.
Montgomery was EMU's top offensive threat in his final season for EMU, which ended with Second-Team All-MAC honors. The left-handed slugger led Eastern in games (61), average (.289), hits (68), home runs (12), RBIs (49), total bases (117), and slugging (.498). He was one of the top home run hitting threats in the MAC, finishing tied for third. He also led the Eagles with 16 multi-RBI games, as well as six three-hit contests. For his career, Montgomery's 20 home runs were good for a tie for 19th all-time at EMU, while his 105 RBIs were 22nd. Montgomery completed his degree in management, finishing with a 3.37 GPA.
Peterson had a great fifth-year senior campaign, battling back from multiple injuries to provide a spark to the EMU bats. The Gilbert, Ariz. native finished just behind Montgomery in batting average (.286), slugging (.441), hits (65), RBIs (35), and total bases (100), while also notching 13 doubles and 35 runs. He also led the Eagles with 21 multi-hit games. He had one of the best performances in EMU history against NIU, May 14, when he had four hits, including three home runs and nine RBIs. His efforts earned him not only MAC Player of the Week status, but also Collegiate Baseball News National Player of the Week. Peterson graduated in the spring with his degree in finance, finishing with a 3.25 GPA.
Rensel, a biology major with a 3.69 GPA, had a solid sophomore campaign, seeing time in 31 games as a first baseman and designated hitter. The lefty had 13 hits, including three doubles, a home run, and 14 RBIs. He had a career-high three hits against Michigan State, May 10, while his home run came against Ohio State, April 12. In addition, Rensel had no errors in 73 putouts and six assists, for a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
Schuemann was a jack-of-all-trades in his sophomore season, seeing time at all four infield positions in 53 games, including 40 starts. He finished the season with 34 hits, including six doubles, a triple, and two home runs, as well as 27 RBIs and 20 runs scored. He also finished the season with a school-record 19 hit by pitch, for a team-high .404 on-base percentage. While on base, Schuemann stole nine bags, good for third on the Eagles. He also saved his best performance for last, as he was named to the MAC All-Tournament team after hitting a tournament-best .556, including a tournament-high 10 hits, nine RBIs, and 18 total bases. In addition, he notched two doubles, two home runs, four runs scored, and three walks. The two home runs were the first two of his two-year EMU career. Schuemann currently has a 3.79 GPA as a business administration major.
Shul was a reliable arm both in a starting role and out of the bullpen in his final season for EMU. The righty made 16 appearances, including four starts, totaling 35.1 innings. He notched a career-best 19 strikeouts, while also earning the first win of his career against Chicago State, April 2. He had a remarkable performance in the MAC Tournament, May 27, when he pitched six innings against No. 2 seeded Central Michigan, allowing just one run on two hits, while striking out four. The performance helped EMU get to its first MAC Championship game appearance since 2008. Shul completed his exercise science degree in the spring, finishing with a 3.53 GPA.
Williams had another promising campaign in 2017, before it was cut short in late April due to injury. Before going down, Williams appeared in 35 games as the primary designated hitter. The left-handed slugger finished with a .280 batting average, totaling 28 hits, including four doubles, two home runs and 15 RBIs. He had a career-high four RBIs against Ohio, April 16, including a walk-off single. He was also named COSIDA Academic All-District for the second consecutive season, May 4. The supply chain management major currently has a 3.70 GPA.
