Women's Swimming and Diving Reels in CSCAA Honors

NORFOLK, Va. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team was recognized by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for its excellence in the classroom Wednesday, June 20. As a team, the Green and White were named CSCAA Scholar All-America for its cumulative 3.54 grade point average. Meanwhile, 11 Eagles garnered CSCAA Individual Scholar All-America accolades, including a pair of first team honorees. Both EMU's GPA and number of individual selections were the best in the Mid-American Conference.
2017 NCAA qualifiers, Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) and Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) garnered First Team CSCAA Scholar All-America honors, while Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville), Brielle Johnston (Ottawa, Ontario-Catholique Franco-Quest), Michal Liberman (Rosh Haayin, Israel-Begin), Gabrielle Mace (Clinton, Mich.), Molly Miller (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Harrison), Alli Shereda (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser), Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville), Mary Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central), and Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville) were named CSCAA Scholar All-America Honorable Mention.
The selections recognize students that have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. In order to lock up honorable mention, student-athletes must maintain a 3.50 GPA and have achieved a 'B' time standard or competed at a regional or zone qualifying meet.
Duncan, a marketing major with a 3.48 grade point average, swam in every meet for the Eagles before wrapping up the season at the NCAA Championships. Duncan defended her title at the MAC Championships, winning the 100 Breaststroke for the second consecutive season. The Galesburg, Ill. native was a force in the breaststroke for the Green and White, totaling 10 first-place finishes, including two sweeps of the 100 and 200 Breast, en route to First Team All-MAC honors.
Mitcheltree made her first trip to the NCAA Championships this season to close the book on a sensational senior season in which she was named to the All-MAC First Team. An individualized studies major with a 3.42 grade point average, Mitcheltree swam in nine meets for Eastern Michigan and was named MAC Swimmer of the Week once. The Moon Twp., Pa. product broke her own program records in the 100 and 200 Backstroke. She posted a career-best time of 52.57 in the 100 Back at the MAC Championships, setting the program standard and winning the conference title. At the NCAA Championships, Mitcheltree clocked in with a career-best time of 1:56.61, again breaking her own program record.
As a freshman, Gavigan secured Second Team All-MAC honors after a sensational performance at the MAC Championships. Swimming in a total of eight meets in her first season as an Eagle, Gavigan posted 13 top-five finishes, including three wins in the 200 Backstroke. She closed out the season with the third-fastest 100 Back time in program history en route to a fifth-place finish. Gavigan went on to take eighth in the 200 Back, clocking in with the second-fastest time in EMU laurels.
Liberman competed in eight meets for EMU in her second season as an Eagle. She maintains a 3.53 grade point average as a journalism major, and was one of Eastern's top performers in the Fly this season. Posting four first-place finishes, Liberman wrapped up the year with a fifth-place mark in the 100 Fly and two other top-20 marks at the MAC Championships.
Diving in five meets, Mace finished the season with three top-five finishes. Mace holds a 3.90 grade point average while majoring in anthropology.
Miller dove in seven meets for the Green and White, all while boasting a 3.76 GPA as an exercise science major. Miller finished fifth on the 3-meter and 10th on the 1-meter at the MAC Championships after posting four top-five finishes throughout the regular season.
Shereda dove in six meets for the Eagles, pacing EMU's efforts on the springboard. A business major with a 3.75 GPA, Shereda broke the 300-point barrier once and locked up seven top-three finishes. The Fraser, Mich. native swept the 1 and 3-meter twice, winning both events against Denison, Oct. 22, and Oakland, Nov. 12. At the MAC Championships, Shereda finished seventh on the 3-meter and 12th on the 1-meter.
Competing in eight meets, Swartz racked up 16 top-five finishes, eight of which were wins. She became the first Eagle to win the 1650 Free MAC title at the conference championships, taking home gold with the second-best time in EMU history. A First Team All-MAC honoree, Swartz also put up some of the top times in EMU laurels in the 500 Free and 400 IM.
Van Allen, a communications major with a 3.90 GPA, swam in eight meets for the Green and White. Turning in a total of 15 top-three finishes, Van Allen locked up nine first-place marks. At the MAC Championships, the Indianapolis, Ind. native claimed fifth in the 200 Individual Medley, fourth in the 200 Free, and 12th in the 1650 Free en route to Second Team All-MAC honors.
Rounding out EMU's selections is Wagner, an exercise science major with a 3.90 grade point average. Wagner competed in eight meets for the Eagles, posting 14 top-three finishes. A team captain for the Green and White, Wagner was named EMU's Exercise Science Student of the Year. A MAC Swimmer of the Week selection, Wagner concluded her career at the MAC Championships. There, she finished third in the 50 Free, 10th in the 200 Free, and 12th in the 100 Free. Wagner's career-best time of 22.58 at the conference meet also ranks as the top time in EMU laurels.
