EMU's pitchers held the MAC leaders to two runs on eight hits
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team once again got a solid day from its pitching staff, but the offense was not able to generate enough in a 2-0 defeat to Kent State University, Sunday afternoon, May 7 at Oestrike Stadium.
The Eagles (18-30, 9-9 MAC) held the Golden Flashes (31-13, 15-3 MAC) to just eight hits on the day, while striking out five. The offense, however, only produced five hits themselves in the shutout, all singles spread among five batters.
Leading the way on the mound was starting pitcher junior Brent Mattson (Canton, Mich.-Canton), who was saddled with the loss after going the first seven innings, only giving up the two runs while striking out four. In relief, senior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) and sophomore Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) retired all six batters they faced, three each, to give EMU the chance in the late innings.
The Golden Flashes got all the runs they needed in the second inning with two runs on three hits. From there, Mattson kept the KSU offense at bay for the next five innings. The righty scattered just four hits over innings three through seven while striking out a pair to maintain the two-run deficit into the eighth inning.
In the eighth, Beaton was summoned from the pen, and picked up where Mattson left off, going 1-2-3 with a strikeout to keep it a close contest into EMU's second to last at bat. After another quick batting trip for the Eagles, Feldman retired the eighth straight batter in the eighth inning to give EMU the chance in the ninth. The Eagles couldn't get a base runner in the ninth though, going three-up, three-down for the 2-0 defeat.
Eastern returns to the diamond this Wednesday, May 10, for the road trip of the home and home series against the Michigan State Spartans. First pitch from East Lansing is set for 4:05 p.m.
