Seven Eagles Earn Academic All-MAC Honors for Outdoor Season

Following another strong outdoor season, seven members of the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team received Academic All-Mid-American Conference honors, the league office announced today, May 31.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.

Earning the honor for Eastern was: redshirt senior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio - Maumee), redshirt junior Caleb Hess (Owosso, Mich. - Owosso), junior Tom Jozwiak (Southgate, Mich. - Thomas J. Anderson), redshirt junior Mitch Lenneman (River Falls, Wis. - River Falls), redshirt sophomore Zach Purcilly (Troy, Mich. - Avondale), redshirt junior Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. - Mason), and sophomore Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich. - Clinton).

Fink is in the midst of another strong year in his final season donning the Green and White. In fact, his season continues next week at the NCAA Championships, June 7-10, where he qualified in the 3000m steeplechase as the No. 7 seed. The Maumee, Ohio native, who was named MAC Championship MVP yet again and studies chemistry while maintaining a 3.82 grade point average, had one of his best races of the season last week at the NCAA East Regional, finishing fifth in the 3000m steeplechase in 8:44.20, which was a season-best, to punch his ticket to Eugene.

Hess, who holds a 3.33 grade point average in computer science, competed for the Green and White multiple times in the 1500m this past outdoor season. Specifically, Hess tallied a third-place finish in the 1500m at the Golden Grizzly Invite, April 14-15, clocking in at 4:08.16. He also posted a career-best 1500m time of 3:55.19 at the Tennessee Relays, April 6-8.

Jozwiak competed in mid-distance events on a regular basis as well. The junior, who maintains a 3.62 GPA in product development and design, posted his best 800m time of the season at the MAC Championships, May 11-13, where he crossed the finish line in 1:55.10. Jozwiak also helped EMU to a pair of third-place finishes in the 4x400m relay at the Gina Relays, April 27-29, and the Golden Grizzly Invite.

Lenneman, an accounting major with a 3.69 GPA, had a career-best time in the 10000m at the Gina Relays, where he crossed the finish line in 31:25.79 to claim 18th. He also nabbed a fourth-place finish at the Tennessee Relays, where he clocked in at 14:26.19 in the 5000m to take fourth.

Purcilly was a regular for the Green and White in the shot put. The Troy, Mich. native, who studies exercise science with a 3.62 GPA, had his best meet of the season at the Raleigh Relays, March 24-25, where he posted a season-best mark of 15.64 meters/ 51 feet 3.75-inches to finish sixth. He also snagged second in the shot put at the Gina Relays.

Raymond capped off another excellent year with a first-place finish in the 10000m at the MAC Championships, where he crossed the finsih line in 30:32.39 to claim the title. The redshirt junior, who is an art major with a 3.64 GPA, also turned in an 11th-place finish at the Stanford Invite, March 31 - April 1, after posting a time of 14:25.88.

Finally, Underwood continued to excel in his second season donning the Green and White. The Clinton, Mich. native, who holds a 3.22 GPA in biology, qualified into the finals of both the 200m and 400m at the MAC Championships, with his best finish coming in the 400m finals, where he claimed fourth in 47.94 seconds. He also posted career-best times of 21.44 in the 200m and 47.49 in the 400m throughout the year.

Fink will cap off the Eagles' season next week at the NCAA Championships. Specifically, he will compete in the semifinals of the 3000m steeplechase on Wednesday, June 7, at 5:02 p.m. Pacific Time. If he qualifies into the finals, that will take place on Friday, June 9, at 5:54 p.m. Pacific Time.
