Women fourth in Jacoby Trophy race; Men take fourth in Reese Trophy standings
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — With another record-setting season in the books for the Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics, the Eagles finished near the top in the battle for the Mid-American Conference all-sports championships. The women's athletic program turned in a fourth-place showing in the race for the Jacoby Trophy, while the men's athletic program also finished fourth in the battle for the Reese Trophy.
It marked just the third time since 1999-2000 that Eastern Michigan placed inside the top-four spots in both standings. Last year, EMU was the runner-up for the Jacoby while taking fourth in the Reese standings. The other time occurred in 2013-14 when the Green and White were third on the women's side and fourth on the men's.
Eastern Michigan won its second consecutive women's cross country title while adding second-place finishes in both women's indoor track & field and women's outdoor track & field. Meanwhile, gymnastics claimed its first regular season championship and followed it up by capturing the league's tournament title for the second year in a row. Women's swimming & diving finished as the runner-up at the championships for third consecutive season.
The Jacoby Trophy is named after former MAC Commissioner Fred Jacoby, who served the league from 1971-82 and is credited with incorporating women's athletics into the league's structure.
Northern Illinois University won the women's team title with a 9.500 average followed in order by Kent State (9.450), Miami (8.000), EMU (7.227), Central Michigan (7.100), Akron (7.017), Ball State (6.694), Ohio (6.150), Western Michigan (6.133), Buffalo (6.074), Toledo (5.583), and Bowling Green (5.514).
EMU won its first Jacoby Trophy in 2014-15 and has finished in the top-five the past five seasons.
The EMU men finished fourth in 2016-17, with Akron (9.500) claiming the championship. Western Michigan had a 9.226 average for its men's sports followed by Ohio at 8.855. Rounding out the final standings was EMU (8.194), Buffalo (7.363), Ball State (6.771), Miami (6.214), Kent State (6.062), Northern Illinois (5.535), Bowling Green (5.416), Central Michigan (5.357), and Toledo (5.250).
On the men's side, the cross country team notched its 21st MAC title, while the men's swimming & diving team brought home its conference-leading 34th championship. Both men's indoor track & field and men's outdoor track & field also finished as the runner-up at their respective championships.
Eastern has won the Reese Trophy four times, capturing the title in 1987-88, 1990-91, 1995-96, and 2007-08.
The Reese Trophy is named for former MAC Commissioner David E. Reese, the first-ever MAC Commissioner who served the league from its inception in 1946 until retiring in 1964.
When compiling Reese and Jacoby Trophy points, all MAC-sponsored sports receive points. The sum of those total points is then divided by the number of sports sponsored by that school, resulting in an average point total. The school with the highest average is awarded the trophy.
Coupled with five Mid-American Conference team titles and 29 individual MAC championships, the 2016-17 campaign was one of the most successful seasons in Eastern Michigan history. In the classroom, EMU student-athletes posted a 3.173 grade point average (GPA) during the winter semester, the sixth-highest mark on record. It was the 15th term in a row EMU student-athletes have earned over a 3.0 GPA.
