Michelle Kriegshauser finished the day 4-for-7 at the plate
ROCHESTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team used a pair of strong outings in the circle to sweep Oakland University, May 3, at OU Softball Field. The Eagles (17-32, 3-18 MAC) took game one 3-1, before wrapping up the sweep with a 4-2 victory in game two.
Game #1: Eastern Michigan 3, Oakland 1 | Game 1 Highlights
Freshman Savanah White (Visalia, Calif.-Redwood) was the story of the game, as the righty hurler went a career-high 7.0 innings en route to the first win of her career. Facing all but two batters in the game, White was tagged for nine hits.
Eastern's offense pounded out six hits in support of White, spread out among seven players. Senior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) posted her 16th multi-hit effort of the year, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
A tough-luck single put Oakland's leadoff batter aboard in the first, but White and the Eagle defense stood strong. After getting the leadoff runner out on a bunt, a ground ball and pop out sent the Green and White back to the bat rack with the game scoreless.
The game remained scoreless into the fourth, where Kriegshauser opened the frame with a leadoff single, EMU's first hit of the day. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, Kriegshauser came around to score on sophomore Olivia Logan's (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) RBI single. Battling at the plate, Logan won a 10-pitch at bat, ripping a single to the left center gap to give Eastern a 1-0 lead.
Eastern Michigan added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth. Freshman Ariana Chretien (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) got things going with a single, which was followed by a single up the middle by junior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) to put two on with nobody out against Oakland's relief pitcher. Sophomore Sam Saporito (Eastvale, Calif.-Eleanor Roosevelt) scored the pinch runner with a single to double EMU's lead. Stepping to the plate as a pinch hitter, freshman Arielle Anderson (Marion, Ohio-Pleasant) brought another run across with an RBI double down the left field line to make the score 3-0. The two-base knock was the first of Anderson's career, while she also recorded her first RBI.
Oakland broke up the shutout in the sixth, plating a run on a hit, an error, and two walks, before White induced an inning-ending fly out to send the game to the final frame.
The Golden Grizzlies made things interesting in the seventh, bringing the winning run to the plate, but White and the Eagles' defense worked their way out of it to secure the 3-1 victory.
Game #2: Eastern Michigan 4, Oakland 2 | Game 2 Highlights
The Eagles totaled six hits in the night cap, led by Kreigshauser and Saporito. Turning in another multi-hit effort, Kriegshauser went 2-for-4, while Saporito turned in a 2-for-3 outing.
In the circle, sophomore Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) had a sensational outing as pitching paved the way once again. The right hander went the distance, striking out five over 7.0 innings of work to come away with her sixth win of the season.
Oakland may as well have gift wrapped the top of the fourth for the Eagles, as the Golden Grizzlies walked three consecutive batters to load the bases with two outs. Olmos capitalized on the opportunity, smoking an RBI single to left to score two.
The Eagles doubled their lead in the sixth, bringing two runs across on two hits and an error. Reaching with a bunt single, Saporito scored on Oakland's error in the outfield to extend EMU's lead to three. Stepping to the plate with Kriegshauser on second, senior Taylor Wagner (Marshaltown, Iowa-Marshaltown) dropped an RBI single into right to make the score 4-0 through six and a half.
The Golden Grizzlies mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with nobody out. A fielder's choice halted EMU's shutout hopes and cut Eastern's lead to three, 4-1, with two outs. A walk reloaded the bags for Oakland and brought the winning run to the plate. The Golden Grizzlies brought another run across to make the score 4-2, before Miranda got the game-ending fly out to close out the win.
The Eagles finish the season this weekend, May 5-6, with a three-game series against in-state foe Central Michigan University at Varsity Field. The Mid-American Conference West Division set begins with a 3 p.m. first pitch Friday, May 5.
