It is the most selections for EMU since 2008

AVON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team had three of its student-athletes named to the 2017 Mid-American Conference All-Tournament team, the conference announced at the conclusion of the playoff today, May 28.

The selections of sophomores Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) and Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice), as well as freshman Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), were the most players named to the 10-man team for EMU since getting four onto the 2008 All-Tournament team.

Schuemann was the Eagles' top offensive weapon in the six-game stretch, leading both EMU, and the rest of the teams in the tournament, with a .556 batting average, including a tournament-high 10 hits, nine RBIs, and 18 total bases. In addition, he notched two doubles, two home runs, four runs scored, and three walks. The two home runs were the first two of his two-year EMU career.

In addition, he was hit by pitch four times to equate to a tournament-best .654 on-base percentage. He finished the season by getting plunked 19 times, which is a new single-season EMU record. With his performance, the infielder, who entered the tournament hitting just .198, upped his average to .233 to finish the season.

Feldman ended up with perhaps the most impressive pitching performance from a gritty weekend from the entire staff. The righty threw a complete game in the 9-1 game one win in the semifinals against No. 2 seeded Central Michigan, May 27. Feldman went the distance for the first complete game of his career, only allowing one run on five hits while striking out five, to send it to a decisive game two later that day.

Overall, Feldman made two appearances, also pitching in relief in the game one loss to No. 6 seeded Western Michigan. He finished the tournament with a 1.50 ERA in the second-most tournament innings with 12, while striking out seven.

Finally, the freshman, Jones, had a productive week, finishing the tournament with a .375 average in 24 at bats, totaling nine hits, including a double, and eight RBIs. The hits and RBIs were the second most by any player, just behind Schuemann.

The honor capped off an impressive first season in the Green and White for Jones, who led all EMU freshman with 49 starts, a .276 batting average, 50 hits, eight doubles, 29 RBIs, and 58 total bases.

As a team, EMU went 4-2 in the tournament, making its first finals appearance since 2008. The offense picked up a battered pitching unit, leading all teams with a .279 batting average, including 58 hits, which was 25 more than the next highest team. EMU also led all teams with 11 doubles, four home runs, 31 walks, and 11 steals. Defensively, the pitching staff tossed to a 4.50 ERA, the fourth best of any team, while tying the tournament lead with 38 Ks.
