EMU finished with its most wins in a season since 2011
AVON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The No. 3 seeded Eastern Michigan University baseball team battled all the way, but in the end ran out of juice in a 7-4 defeat to the No. 5 seeded Ohio University Bobcats in the 2017 Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship, Sunday afternoon, May 28, at Sprenger Stadium. The Eagles finished the season with a 27-35 record, their most wins since 2011.
EMU had the momentum almost all the way through the game, leading by three runs into the eighth inning before OU went for six in that frame to leap ahead, and hold on for the eventual three-run defeat.
The offense led the way as they have all tournament long, springing for 12 hits, out-hitting the Bobcats by two. The hits just didn't come at all the right times though, as EMU left 12 men on as well. Leading the way was sophomore Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern), who concluded his excellent week with a three-hit performance, including his second double. In his final EMU game, redshirt senior Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) had a solo home run, the seventh of his season and 19th of his career.
On the mound, junior Brad Allen (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester (Jackson College)) had a gutsy performance on short rest, taking a no decision after going the first seven innings, and keeping the lead into the the eighth, while striking out two.
The Bobcats struck first, manufacturing a run in the third after a leadoff double. A sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly scored the games' first runner, giving OU the early advantage. The lead was short lived though as EMU answered back in the bottom half of the third.
Leading things off, Mioduszewski parked a monster shot to left field, his first of the tournament and seventh of the season, to tie the game back up at one. Later in the inning, runners stood at first and third with no outs after a walk and single, bringing up freshman Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline). The freshman drove in the leading run with an RBI fielder's choice after a failed double play turn.
The inning continued after Schuemann doubled down the line to put runners at second and third with one out. Another RBI groundout, this time from freshman Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), put EMU ahead by two into the fourth.
On the mound, Allen pitched around the run in the third to hold OU to just three hits through the first five innings, while not striking out a single batter. In the sixth, OU got its fourth hit, but a strikeout and nice defensive play from Allen kept the lead intact.
His efforts led to the lead being extended in a crazy sixth inning. EMU got the leadoff man on, but he was erased on a caught stealing. With two outs later in the frame, sophomore Drake Lubin (West Bloomfield, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) reached on an error, and Eastern capitalized on it. Redshirt senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) stepped up, and took the first pitch down the left field line to score Lubin from first, making it a 4-1 tally into the seventh. Allen had yet another 1-2-3 inning in the seventh, keeping EMU's lead steady into the stretch.
Things unraveled in the eighth inning as Ohio got the first two runners on, and followed that up with a three-run home run to knot the game at four each. This led to a pitching change for the Eagles, but things didn't get better as a couple singles and an error led to the leading run scoring for OU. The final batter of the inning doubled in two more to give Ohio the 7-4 lead with two more trips to the plate left for EMU.
The Eagles went quietly in the bottom of the eighth, but got a 1-2-3 in the top half of the ninth to maintain the three-run deficit into the final at bat. In the bottom of the ninth, EMU got a pair of two-out singles to bring the tying run to the plate, but Ohio got the final out to clinch the 2017 MAC Tournament title.
At the conclusion of the tournament, EMU had three players named to the 2017 MAC All-Tournament Team, its most since 2008. Earning the honor were Schuemann, Jones, and sophomore Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice).
