RE-LISTEN TO THE GAME

AVON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) –
The No. 3 seeded Eastern Michigan University baseball team, behind a heroic pitching performance from sophomore Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) defeated the No. 2 seeded Central Michigan University 9-1 Saturday afternoon, May 27, at Sprenger Stadium. The win sets up the decisive second semifinal game later this afternoon.

Feldman pitched the game of his life, going the distance for the first complete game of his career, only allowing the one run on five hits to go along with five strikeouts and two walks. It was the second straight season with a complete game performance for an EMU pitcher in the MAC Tournament after Augie Gallardo did so last season. It was also the fourth complete game for an Eagle pitcher this season.

Offensively, the Eagles took an early lead and never looked back. The offense tallied 10 hits on the day, yet only scored three runs off of actual hits. Leading the way were a pair of freshman, Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) and Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline). The rookies both went 3-for-5 with two RBIs each.

Eastern jumped out to the early lead, springing for three in the first inning. The bags quickly became loaded with no outs after two walks and an infield single for senior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra). The slugger drove in the first with a sacrifice fly, followed immediately by an RBI groundout from Owings to make it 2-0. The third run was knocked in by sophomore Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) on a single to left, giving EMU the early three-run cushion.

The Eagles manufactured another run in the second on another leadoff walk. Redshirt senior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich-Paw Paw) drew the free pass, and was sacrifice bunted to second. After a passed ball, redshirt senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) knocked him in on another RBI groundout, making the tally 4-0 in favor of Eastern.

On the hill, Feldman held CMU in check through three, striking out a pair. EMU added on to its lead in the fourth, generating yet another run on a sacrifice fly. After a leadoff HBP from Gill, runners got on the corners after an error and Peterson drove in his second with a fly out to right, extending the lead to 5-0. Feldman went 1-2-3 for the in the fourth to cruise into the fifth.

In the fifth, Feldman continued to roll, retiring his eighth straight, along with two more K's, to up his total to five with only two hits allowed through five frames. He upped his streak to 11 straight in the sixth to maintain the shutout into the seventh.

EMU tacked on some insurance in the seventh inning, going for three more in the eighth to put EMU up eight. A leadoff walk by senior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) got it started, followed by a groundout and wild pitch to move him to third. Owings got his second hit and RBI of the day with a single to score the first. Another walk and passed ball set runners up on 2nd and 3rd, where Jones drove in a second with a RBI fielder's choice. Run number three came across on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Drake Lubin (West Bloomfield, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), putting EMU ahead big, 8-0, into the stretch.

Despite giving up a pair of hits in the bottom of the seventh, Feldman got through the inning unscathed to keep the shutout intact into the final two innings. In the eighth, CMU turned a leadoff double into its first run of the day later on a sac fly, breaking the shutout, 8-1, into the ninth.

Eastern plated one more for good measure in the ninth on an RBI infield base hit from Jones, his third hit and second RBI of the day, to make it an eight-run ballgame into the final half inning. In the ninth, CMU got two runners to reach, but Feldman was able to get the lineout to third to finish off the complete game victory.

EMU and CMU return to the diamond later this afternoon for the decisive second semifinal game. First pitch from Sprenger Stadium is set for approximately 4:30 p.m. Follow @EMU_Baseball for all of the latest schedule updates.
