SOMERS, Wis. (EMUEagles.com) — Both of Eastern Michigan University's swimming and diving programs were ranked inside the top-25 of CollegeSwimming.com's Mid-Major poll, the publication released Tuesday, May 23. On the women's side, the Green and White came in slotted 10th, while the men were tabbed 19th in the end of season rankings. Meanwhile, the Mid-American Conference tied for the strongest league on the women's side, while it tied for fourth on the men's side.
Yale and Denver tied for the title on the women's side after winning their respective conference titles. Boise State, Akron, and Harvard rounded out the top-five. The Eagles, who came in with 792.79 points, cracked the top-10 and came in with the second-highest score in the Mid-American Conference. Buffalo ranked on the heels of Eastern, slotted 11th, while Miami (20th), Bowling Green (39th), and Ohio (43rd) also made the top-50.
The Green and White finished runner-up at the 2017 MAC Championships, paced by a trio of individual titles. Senior Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) won the 100 Backstroke, while sophomores Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) and Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) reeled in first-place finishes in the 100 Breaststroke and 1650 Freestyle, respectively.
Harvard led the way on the men's side of things, with Penn, Denver, Yale, and Air Force rounding out the top-five. Missouri State was the top-ranked MAC squad, coming in seventh. The men find themselves slotted 19th after securing their 34th MAC Championship following an improbable comeback, the second-highest mark within the league. Buffalo (24th), Southern Illinois (26th), and Miami (33rd) also made the cut.
Senior Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Catholic) paced an outstanding effort by EMU's divers, locking up first-place finishes on both the 1 and 3-meter dives en route to MAC Diver of the Year honors. Sophomore sensation Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) led a 1-2-3 sweep of the 200 Backstroke on the final day of the conference meet, winning gold with a time of 1:44.73.
