AVON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) –
The No. 3 seeded Eastern Michigan University baseball team rallied late, but ultimately fell in 10 innings to No. 6 seeded Western Michigan University, 6-5, Wednesday, May 24, in Mid-American Conference Tournament action at Sprenger Stadium.

EMU came back from two down in the ninth inning to send it to extra innings, but Western scored one in the top of the 10th, and EMU couldn't answer to fall in the tournament opener.

Eastern's offense still pounded out 10 hits, led by a pair of three-hit, two-RBI games. First, senior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) had three hits, tying his career-best, including his sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot. Freshman Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) had the other three-hit contest, tying his career-high, which included the clutch two-run double in the ninth to send it to extra innings.

On the hill, senior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) earned a no decision after going the first seven innings, allowing four earned runs while striking out nine. That moved his total to 91 K's on the season, which is the ninth-most in a single season in EMU history.

After striking out the side in the first, Delaplane was tagged for a pair of solo shots in the second inning to make it 2-0 early on. Another run, this time unearned, scored in the third after a fielding error to put Eastern in a 3-0 hole.

The Eagles got on the board in the third inning, striking for a two-out run on an RBI single from freshman Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline). After two runners reached on base hits, Owings was able to deliver the single to right to score the runner, making it 3-1 after three innings.

Following two scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth, Western added to its lead with two more runs on two hits and a walk in the sixth, putting it at a four-score game, 5-1. In the bottom of the sixth, EMU loaded up the bases with two outs, but Western's reliever was able to get a strikeout to keep EMU off the board and send it to the seventh.

The bats started to heat up in the seventh, as redshirt senior Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) led off with a double in the gap and Stidham followed with a two-run bomb to left field, making it a two-run game with no outs in the inning. It was the 14th homer of his EMU career. Later in the inning, two more runners reached on two hits, but were left stranded after a nice defensive play from WMU.

After a scoreless eighth from relief pitcher Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice), EMU got the leadoff man on in the bottom half, and he was eventually advanced to third, but was left stranded to maintain the two-run deficit into the final frame.

In the ninth, EMU got two on again with just one out, and they did not waste the opportunity, as Jones doubled down the left field line to score both runs and tie the game at five apiece. Despite having the man on second, WMU kept the tie in place sending the game to extras.

The 10th inning started off shaky, as WMU loaded the bases with no outs. It looked like EMU might escape the jam after a 5-2-3 double play made it two outs in the inning, but Western got the big two-out single to retake the lead, 6-5. In the bottom half, Eastern once again began to rally, loading the bases with just one out, but a double play ended the game in heartbreaking fashion.

EMU will return to the diamond tomorrow morning, May 25, for an elimination game against No. 7 Northern Illinois. First pitch from Sprenger Stadium is set for 9:30 a.m.
