Baseball Overpowered in Defeat to West Virginia

5/2/2017 9:21:00 PM | Baseball

EMU had three hits on the evening

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team was overpowered in a 17-1 defeat to West Virginia University, Tuesday evening, May 2, at Monongalia County Ballpark.

EMU's (18-27) offense could only muster three hits on the night, led by an RBI double from sophomore John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge) in the eighth inning. Other than that, they got six other base runners on three walks, one hit by pitch, and two errors.

The Mountaineers (26-17) jumped all over the Eagles early, ambushing them for four runs on four hits to take an early 4-0 lead. WVU doubled that lead in the second, getting four more runs on four more hits, giving them a huge 8-0 lead after just two innings.

EMU was able to get two runners in scoring position in the fourth, getting two walks and a wild pitch to make it second and third with two outs. However, WVU induced the groundout to end the threat, and keep EMU without a hit through four.

In the bottom of the fourth, WVU was able to tack on four more, including three on a home run, to make it a 12-0 ballgame into the fifth inning. In the fifth, WVU added another run, this one unearned after an error, to put it at 13-0 into the sixth.

Three more Mountaineer runs crossed in the sixth to put it at 16-0 into the seventh. EMU finally notched a hit in the seventh inning, a sharp single from freshman Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline), to break up the no hitter, but no other offense was generated.

EMU broke the shutout in the eighth on a pinch hit double from Rensel after a walk, making it 16-1. It was his second double and 12th RBI on the season. WVU answered immediately in the bottom of the eighth, getting the run back. Despite another single from Owings in the ninth, EMU couldn't get any more runs across to end the game.

Eastern now has the rest of the week off before returning home and resuming MAC play with a three-game series against conference leader Kent State University. The series against the Golden Flashes gets underway with a 6 p.m. first pitch, Friday, May 5.
