The 18 runs marked a season-high for EMU in 2017

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team continued to roll through the conference schedule with an 18-3 drubbing of the University of Toledo Thursday evening, May 18, at Oestrike Stadium. EMU (22-32, 13-9) notched a season-high in runs in the win, and have now won four straight conference games while scoring 48 runs over the span.

Eastern banged out 17 hits, one off the season-high set against Ohio, April 15. Each member of EMU's starting lineup had at least one hit and one RBI. Leading the charge was sophomore Drake Lubin (West Bloomfield, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) who had a career-day with four hits and four RBIs. In addition, freshman Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) also set a career-best mark with a four-RBI day on two hits, while fellow freshman Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) tied his career-high with three hits, while also knocking in one.

It was an equally productive day on the mound, as two pitchers combined to go the distance, only allowing eight hits. Senior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) earned his fourth win of the season after going the first six innings, striking out five to put his career EMU total at 200, just the 11th pitcher in Eastern Michigan history to reach that milestone. He also put his season tally at 82, which is the 10th-most in a single season in EMU history. Sophomore Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) earned his second save of the season after completing the final three innings, only allowing two baserunners to reach in the ninth.

The first inning was a busy one, as Toledo took the early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. EMU responsed in a big way though, answering back with four of its own in the bottom of the first.

It all started with two outs, as senior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) took a hit by pitch for EMU's first baserunner. After a single and walk, the bags were loaded for Lubin. The centerfielder legged out the infield RBI single to get EMU on the board, 2-1. With the bags still loaded, the seven hitter, Jones, gave EMU the lead with a two-RBI single. EMU wasn't finished though, as Owings used a squeeze bunt to drive in EMU's fourth run, putting the score at 4-2 after just one inning.

EMU added to the lead in the third, manufacturing three more runs. A Toledo error led off the inning, followed by a single from Lubin to make it first and third with no outs. The first runner was driven in by Jones on an RBI groundout. One batter later, with runners on the corners again, Owings had an infield single to load up the bags for sophomore Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern). The infielder knocked in the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.

The Eagles weren't done yet though, as with the top of the order back up, redshirt senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) remained on fire with a double down the line, scoring Owings and putting the tally at 7-2 through three. In the top of the fourth, UT got a solo homer to get one back.

Eastern continued to pile on in the fourth, springing for two more on a two-RBI single from Lubin. After a single from senior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) and double from redshirt senior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw), Lubin singled both of them in to give EMU its biggest lead, 9-3. The onslaught continued into the fifth, as EMU scored in its third consecutive inning with two more. A redshirt senior Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) triple scored the first, just the third triple of his career. The next batter, Stidham, drove in Mioduszewski with a sacrifice fly, to put it at 11-3.

On the mound, Delaplane got through his second straight scoreless inning in the sixth, which included his fifth strikeout of the day, which marked the 200th of his career. His day was ended after the sixth, giving up just the three runs on six hits.

EMU poured it on in the sixth, putting the game well out of reach with five more runs. The bases quickly became loaded with no outs to bring up Peterson. The senior earned his second RBI with a sac fly. After a walk loaded them back up, a UT error plated the second run of the inning. Then EMU drew two RBI walks in a row, one from Montgomery and one from Gill, to force the Rockets back to the bullpen with a 15-3 score.

EMU got one more to eclipse their season high as Lubin drove in his fourth runner with a sacrifice fly to center field. Into the seventh, EMU had the insurmountable 16-3 advantage. Following a scoreless seventh, EMU continued to rake in the eighth.

The Eagles added two runs of unneeded insurance as runners came in on RBI singles from Jones and Schuemann to make it an 18-3 total into the ninth. Despite giving up his first two baserunners in the ninth, Feldman was able to complete the game with no further damage, locking up the three-inning save and the 15-run win.

EMU gets back on the diamond tomorrow, May 19, for game two of the series against Toledo. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., and will be preceded by the Alumni Night ceremony, where the team will honor the accomplishments of the 1982 and 2007 MAC Champion teams.
