ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Despite an early advantage, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team could not generate enough firepower to keep pace with No. 16 University of Michigan in a 12-4 defeat, Tuesday evening, May 16 at Ray Fisher Stadium.
EMU's (21-32) offense got going early, leading 2-0 in the second, and then 3-2 in the third, but UM scored 10 unanswered runs to run away with the ballgame.
The offense was able to generate eight hits on the day, spread among six batters. Leading the output was redshirt senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) who followed up his monster game on Sunday with a two-hit day, including a double and his second triple of the year, as well as an RBI. It was his team-leading 18th multi-hit game of the season. The other highlight came from fellow redshirt senior Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) as he smacked his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot. It was the 18th of his EMU career.
EMU struck first in the second after a quick first inning, tagging the Wolverines (40-12) for a pair of runs on three hits. Leading off the inning was senior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra), who singled to center and advanced to second on a misplay by the centerfielder. The next batter, freshman Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline), wasted no time driving him home, doubling down the line, scoring the first run of the ballgame. One batter later, John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge) doubled the lead with an RBI single of his own, making it 2-0 Eagles early on.
The lead was short lived though, as UM answered back in the bottom half of the second with two runs of its own to knot the contest back up into the third. The tie was also short lived, as EMU jumped back ahead in the third with a towering solo homer from Mioduszewski to lead off the frame. The big righty smacked one high and deep to left, his sixth of the season, to make it 3-2 EMU.
Michigan battled back in the bottom of the third, this time taking its first and final lead of the game with two runs, the second on a passed ball, to put the tally at 4-3 in favor of the Wolverines into the fourth. In the fifth, UM extended its lead with three more runs to make it an 8-3 contest as the game rolled on into the sixth.
The Wolverines did not let up in the sixth, going for four more runs to give UM a big 12-3 advantage before the final three innings. EMU got one back in the ninth on Peterson's RBI double, but it was not enough, sealing the eight-run defeat.
Eastern will now turn its sights toward the final regular season series of the year coming up against MAC rival the University of Toledo. The three-game series against the Rockets gets underway at Oestrike Stadium with a 6 p.m. first pitch, Thursday, May 18.
