Volleyball's Olson Selected to Attend Marine Corps Clinic

EMU head coach headed to attend four-day Marine Corps Coaching Workshop in Virginia
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University Head Volleyball Coach Kimi Olson has been selected to attend the four-day Marine Corps Coaching Workshop in Quantico, Va., May 17-20. The annual workshop provides selected coaches an opportunity to learn how Marine Officers are recruited, screened, and developed into leaders. Olson is among five other Division I level coaches selected to attend the workshop.
"I am so excited to be a part of this experience" said Olson. "Being immersed in the way the marines train our top soldiers is an experience of a lifetime and one that I hope to gain perspective and culture to bring back to Eastern."
The Coaches Workshop coordinated by American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is a four-day intensive leadership workshop designed to teach coaches from across the nation Marine Corps small unit leadership tactics, techniques and procedures. The mission of the AVCA is to advance the sport of volleyball with AVCA coaches at the epicenter of leadership, advocacy and professional development. The AVCA provides education to volleyball coaches, recognition of elite players and coaches, promotion of volleyball competitions throughout the world, and networking opportunities for volleyball products and services providers.
The workshop includes motivating workouts, lectures, leadership courses, tours and other activities lead by Marine leaders. During the workshop, coaches will gain an understanding of Marine Corps' leadership traits and principle that they can translate to their teams to foster a culture of leadership among student-athletes. The workshop concludes with the Commanding General's presentation of certificates.
"I teach volleyball in a way to help prepare my student-athletes for life and challenges after volleyball," commented Olson. Whether it is attempting to advance your career, taking care of your family, or fighting for our country, the ability to handle stress and face challenges for things we believe in and is something we talk about often."
Olson started her head-coaching career as an Eagle in 2015, after 11 years of experience coaching and competing at the Division I level between the College of Charleston, University of Albany, and the University of Southern California. Since 2015, she has not only lead the Eagles to 21 wins, but also been a wife and mother to three young children, with the most recent child born less than five months ago.
