Five Eagles Named to Academic All-MAC Women's Tennis Team

Eastern Michigan places the second most honorees on the list

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team saw five Eagles named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference team the league office announced Thursday, May 11. Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) and Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) each earned distinction for the first time in their careers, while Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic), Renu Sharma (Fardabad, India), and Anna Velva (Sofia, Bulgaria) garnered the honor for the second consecutive season.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.

Almoyna, a junior with a 3.42 GPA is majoring in Entrepreneurship. The Spaniard posted a 4-16 record in dual matches this season. In doubles competition, Almoyna teamed up with Veleva to hold a 4-7 overall record, while posting a 1-4 record with Sharma.

Mayernova, earned her first Academic All-MAC distinction as a sophomore. She is majoring in Criminology and owns a 3.34 grade point average. The Czech Republic native went 13-17 overall with a 9-8 dual record, and a 2-1 record through Mid-America conference play. Mayernova and Martinovska held a 15-14 overall doubles record, posting 7-7 dual record and 8-7 tour record.  

The International Affairs major, Martinovska, received her second All-MAC team recognition with a 3.70 grade point average. Martinovska went 9-24 this season in singles play, holding a 2-6 record in MAC competitions. As for double play, Martinovska won 17 matches between partners Mayerova and Veleva.

Sharma, was again elected to the All-MAC academic holding a 3.37 grade point average while majoring in Management. She closed her junior season posting a 2-7 overall singles record. For doubles play, she paired with Veleva in nine matches and Almoyna for five, posting a total of 14 doubles competitions.  

Finally, Veleva's 3.79 GPA in Economics landed the Bulgarian native her second spot on the Mid-American Conference All-Academic team. Individually, she produced a 15-16 overall record, earning 10-12 dual record, 5-4 tour record, and 3-5 record in MAC competition. Over the course of the season Veleva saw 9 wins in doubles matches with four different partners.
