Eagles Swept by Falcons as EMU Drops Series Finale

4/9/2017 2:49:00 PM | Softball

EMU was swept in MAC play for the first time this season

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team fell in its weekend finale against Bowling Green State University Sunday, April 9, in Mid-American Conference cross-divisional action at Meserve Field. The Eagles (14-22, 2-9 MAC) took an early lead, but could not overcome the Falcons (20-22, 6-5 MAC) three-run third, suffering a 3-1 setback.

Senior Taylor Wagner (Marshalltown, Iowa.-Marshalltown) notched her 11th multi-hit performance of the season, going 2-for-3 on the day, as the Eagles tallied six hits.

In the circle, junior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) and sophomore Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) split the pitching duties. Trujillo got the start and went 2.0 innings, giving up three runs on five hits. Meanwhile, Miranda went 4.0 frames in relief, striking out one and allowing two hits.

Senior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) broke the second inning open with a leadoff single, igniting the EMU dugout. A sacrifice bunt moved Kriegshauser into third, before a squeeze brought her home. Reaching second on an error on her RBI bunt, freshman Ariana Chretien (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) scooted into second with one down. Hostetler walked in the next at bat, but a strikeout and ground out halted the Eagles' threat.

Bowling Green responded in the third, plating three runs on five hits, to take a 3-1 lead with three innings in the book. The three-run inning by the Falcons brought about a pitching change for the Eagles, as Miranda entered the game in relief. Inheriting bases loaded with no outs, Miranda escaped the jam with minimal damage as a sacrifice fly was the only run she yielded.

The Eagle brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the sixth, as Wagner and Kriegshauser reached base. Wagner belted a single to right center, while Kriegshauser made her way on via an error by BGSU's second baseman. A fly ball to center allowed Wagner to tag, putting runners on the corners with two away, before a strikeout ended EMU's scoring opportunity.

Miranda made quick work of the Falcons in the sixth, setting up the Eagles for comeback in the seventh. A one-out single by freshman Danielle Rico (Moreno Valley, Calif.-Grand Terrace) brought the tying run to the plate, but EMU failed to do much more offensively, falling, 3-1.

Eastern Michigan continues MAC play Wednesday, April 12, when the Eagles return home for a single game against West Division rival, Toledo. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Varsity Field.
