Offense Explodes in EMU's 10-6 Win over Miami

4/9/2017 5:45:00 PM | Baseball

The Eagles clinched the weekend series to move to 4-2 in MAC play

OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team's offense exploded in a 10-6 win over Miami University, Sunday afternoon, April 9, at McKie Field, to clinch the weekend series. EMU (12-19, 4-2 MAC) pounded out 15 hits on the day, its most since a season-high 17 on March 10.

Leading the offensive output was the heart of the order, as the two, three, four, and five hitters combined for 11 hits and nine RBI's. Redshirt senior Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) finished the day with four hits, tying his career-high set in 2015, including a double and his second home run of the season. Fellow seniors John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) and Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) each had three-hit days, with Montgomery driving in three, including a home run, and double, and Stidham knocking in a pair. It was Montgomery's team-leading fifth homer of the season. Finally, sophomore John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge) tied his career-high with a three-RBI double in the sixth, his first extra base hit of the year.

On the mound, junior Justin McMurtrey (Redding, Calif.-Shatsa (Butte C.C.)) earned his third win of the season, tying the team lead, after going 1.2 innings and striking out two. Sophomore Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) notched his first save of the season, and second of his career, after finishing out the final four innings, only giving up one run and tying his career mark with six K's.

The first two innings were uneventful on the offensive side, while junior starting pitcher Brent Mattson (Canton, Mich.-Canton) held Miami (8-23, 2-7 MAC) in check with three strikeouts through the first two. In the third inning, EMU bat's warmed up, as Mioduszewski and Montgomery went back-to-back with solo home runs, both to dead center, to make it 2-0. It was the first time EMU went for back-to-back jacks since last season against Western Michigan, April 24.

Eastern doubled the lead in the fourth inning with two more RBI's from Montgomery. With two outs and the bases juiced, he singled up the middle to score a pair more and put it at 4-0.

Miami broke through in the bottom half of the fourth though, using patience at the plate to draw a bases loaded walk, chasing Mattson from the game. McMurtrey came on in relief and escaped the jam, getting a strikeout and fly out to end the threat and keep it a 4-1 score through four.

The RedHawks kept things going in the fifth, taking their first lead of the game with four runs on four hits, including a bases-clearing triple, to lead it 5-4 after five. The lead was short lived however, as the Eagles rallied back in the sixth with a big frame.

The bases became loaded with no outs to start it after a single and two walks. With one out, Stidham delivered the game-tying hit with a single to left, making it five apiece. The next batter, Rensel Jr., notched a huge three-RBI double to straight away center, allowing EMU to retake the lead, 8-5.

Both teams continued trading blows as Miami got another run in the bottom of the sixth on a pair of two-out hits, but the reliever, Feldman, got a pair down on strikes to maintain the two-run advantage. He tossed another clean seventh to keep the score steady into the eighth.

EMU's offense kept pounding away in the eighth, getting two more runs on four hits. Montgomery led off with a double, followed by a single from Stidham to score the first. Following a wild pitch, freshman Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) knocked in Stidham with an infield single, making it a four-run game, 10-6.

Feldman was steady though the final two innings, only allowing one base runner, to lock down the save and clinch the game, and series, with the 10-6 victory.

EMU will return to action this Tuesday, April 11, for the first game of the season against the University of Michigan Wolverines. First pitch from Ann Arbor is set for 4 p.m.
