Big Innings Cost Eagles in Doubleheader Versus Falcons

4/8/2017 4:59:00 PM | Softball

The series finale takes place tomorrow, April 9, at 1 p.m.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team was swept by Bowling Green State University, Saturday, April 8, at Meserve Field. EMU could not avoid the big inning, falling 5-0 and 3-2, as BGSU scored all its runs over two innings.

Game #1: Bowling Green 5, Eastern Michigan 0
Junior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) fell to 8-11 on the season, despite a complete game effort, which was her second in as many games. Trujillo was tagged for nine hits, surrendering five runs, two of which were earned, while walking two.

Senior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) and sophomore Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) led the offense for the Eagles, as the duo posted multi-hit efforts. Overall, EMU registered six hits, while Kriegshauser and Logan each went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Bowling Green timed up Trujillo in the second, ripping a pair of singles to get the bottom half of the frame going. After a bunt single loaded the bases, a bases loaded walk brought the first run of the game across the plate, giving BGSU a 1-0 edge. From there, the defense faltered. A high throw brought another run around, before an error in the outfield cleared the bases and pushed the Falcons' lead to 5-0.

Eastern Michigan worked out of a few jams over the next few innings, as Trujillo did not yield another run from the second inning on. Meanwhile, EMU stranded a total of six baserunners over the course of the game, as the Green and White failed to manufacture any runs off of BGSU's Meredith Miller, falling, 5-0.

Game #2: Bowling Green 3, Eastern Michigan 2
Sophomore Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) started the second leg of the doubleheader, going the distance and striking out two. The Falcons managed eight hits off of Miranda, but the Wilmington, Calif. native allowed just three runs, two of which were earned, as she dropped to 4-6 on the season.

Offensively, EMU finished tied with BGSU with eight hits. The Eagles were paced by senior Taylor Wagner (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown) and sophomore Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra). Wagner finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Akles went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.

The Falcons plated three runs on four hits to take a 3-0 lead with four innings in the books. A solo home run broke open the frame, before an infield single and a two-out error allowed Bowling Green to tack on two more.

Eastern Michigan broke the shutout in the top of the fifth, as sophomore Sam Saporito (Eastvale, Calif.-Eleanor Roosevelt) led the inning off with an infield single. Saporito came around to score two batters later, as Wagner sliced a triple down the right field line to clear the bases. Wagner's knock cut Bowling Green's lead to two, 3-1.

In the sixth, Akles blasted her sixth home run of the season to pull Eastern within one, 3-2, on a solo shot. Not only did the home run tie Akles for the team lead in the category, but it also marked the fourth consecutive MAC series in which the La Habra, Calif. native has gone yard this season.

Miranda pitched her way out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom half of the sixth, getting an inning-ending 1-2-3 double play to escape and bring EMU to the plate for its final turn at bat.

The Eagles went down in order as their comeback fell short, 3-2.

The Eagles and Falcons close out the weekend tomorrow, April 9, with a 1 p.m. first pitch at Meserve Field.
