YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the Eastern Michigan University football team closed out the 2017 Spring football season with its annual Spring Game, April 8, inside "The Factory" at Rynearson Stadium. After nearly an hour of play, the Green team, representing the offense, claimed the victory by a final tally of 29-24.
Redshirt senior Brogan Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Toledo St. John's Jesuit) commanded the Green team offense for a majority of the game, finishing 15-of-27 with 151 yards passing and a touchdown. When it came to rushing, redshirt sophomore Breck Turner (Norwalk, Ohio-Norwalk) rumbled for 45 yards on 11 attempts, with his longest run being a big 30-yard gain. Senior Sergio Bailey II (La Mesa, Calif.-Olympian (Grossmont College)) was the leading receiver, hauling in five passes for 55 yards, while fellow senior Antoine Porter (San Francisco, Calif.-Mission (City College of San Francisco)) hauled in the game's lone touchdown.
Defensively, four Eagles each finished with four tackles. Junior Jaylen Pickett (Zephyrhills, Fla.-Zephyrhills) had a big sack for a loss of nine yards, marking the only sack of the afternoon. Redshirt senior Dion Dawson (Cincinnati, Ohio-Western Hills (Dodge City C.C.)) had a tackle for loss as well, while redshirt sophomore Clay Holford (Carrollton, Texas-Hebron) scooped up a fumble.
With the game pitting the offense, wearing Green, against the defense, donning Gray, a specialized scoring system was used. The offense earned one point for a first down, three points for a field goal, six points for a touchdown, and one point for a PAT. On the other side of the ball, the defense earned two points for a stop on downs, five points for a turnover, 11 points for a defensive touchdown, one point for a PAT, and three for a fourth down stop.
In the opening minutes of play, neither side of the ball could pull ahead, as the two teams remained close. However, after a few drives, the Green team rumbled into the red zone and a 32-yard field goal from redshirt sophomore Paul Fricano (Rochester, N.Y.-Churchville-Chili) made it a 7-4 game with the Green team in front.
However, the Gray team quickly responded just a few possessions later. After the Green team appeared to be poised to march down the field once again, the defense forced a big fumble and Holford came up with the recovery, adding five points to the Gray column and tying things up at 11.
The defense continued controlling the game in the next few minutes, as a stop on downs gave the Gray team its first lead, 13-11. Despite a big sack from Pickett forcing the Green team into poor field position, redshirt junior Blake Banham (St. Paul, Minn.-Cretin-Derham Hall) was able to find a gap and rush for 11 yards to set up a big first down, cutting the Gray lead to 13-12.
Shortly after, the Green team was able to find the end zone for the first time in the game. With Roback at quarterback, the offense marched down the field and into the red zone. From there, Porter was able to secure a big third down catch in the end zone, tacking on seven more points after the PAT to push Green in front, 22-15.
After that, Fricano came on to practice a number of field goals at different distance. The highlight came midway through the drill, as the Rochester, N.Y. native drilled a 48-yarder. After the offense retook the field, the Green team once again was able to get into field goal range, and Fricano came up clutch with yet another field goal to put the score at 28-22.
With just a few minutes remaining in the game, the Gray team still had a chance to pull out the comeback. They were able to get a stop on downs for another two points, but not anything else. The offense emerged victorious by a final score of 29-24, flipping the script on last year in which the defense won 28-20.
