EMU dropped to 3-2 in conference play
OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team couldn't get the offense going in a 6-2 defeat to Miami University, Saturday night, April 8, at McKie Field. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for EMU (11-19, 3-2 MAC).
The game was tight until the late innings, but EMU's five hits couldn't generate any offense, with the only RBI coming on a bases loaded walk from freshman Devin Hager (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), while the other scored on a balk.
Taking the tough loss was starting pitcher junior Brad Allen (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester (Jackson College)) who only gave up one earned run through 5.2 innings, striking out five.
Both offenses struggled to get anything going through the first three innings, getting two hits each. Allen escaped a bases loaded jam in the second, but otherwise was stout through three, striking out four RedHawk (8-22, 2-6 MAC) batters.
The Eagles got the scoring started in the fourth, manufacturing a run with two outs. With the bases juiced after a single and two walks, Hager was able to work a third straight free pass to bring home a run and make it 1-0.
Miami was able to break the shutout in the fourth, getting a pair of unearned runs to cross after a two-out error and back-to-back hits, putting the tally at 2-1 after four.
Following a clean fifth, Miami got another in the sixth, tagging EMU for a run to make it 3-1 into the late innings. The fourth RedHawk runner came in to score in the seventh after back-to-back extra base knocks, putting EMU in a three-run hole with two to play.
EMU had a chance to chip into the lead in the bottom of the eighth, getting runners to second and third with just one out after a walk and senior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) double, but Miami was able to induce a pop out and strikeout to end the threat. Miami tacked on some more insurance in the bottom of the eighth, getting two more to put it at 6-1 into EMU's final at bat.
Eastern was able to generate another run in the bottom of the frame on a balk from Miami, but couldn't get the necessary support and dropped the 6-2 decision.
The series will conclude tomorrow afternoon, April 9, with the rubber match from McKie Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
