The senior launched his team-best fourth of the season
After losing a lead in the seventh inning, EMU (11-18, 3-1 MAC) rallied in the extra frames with Montgomery's two-out, two run blast. It was his team-best fourth on the season and 12th for his EMU career. With the victory, Eastern has won four straight and eight of its last 11.
Before the late rally by Miami, senior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) had a solid outing in a no decision effort, going 6.2 and striking out eight. He now has 157 for his EMU career, which ranks 14th all-time at Eastern. Picking up the win in relief was senior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) after tossing the final 3.1, tying a career-high, without giving up an earned run, while striking out three.
The offense turned on early, didn't come back on until late, but still managed to notch seven hits on the evening. Montgomery finished 2-for-5 to lead the way, while junior Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) also tallied a two-hit day, including his first home run of the season. It was his first round-tripper since April 24 of last season.
The Eagles were first to strike in the top of the first with three runs on two hits and an error. Williams led off with a single, and senior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) was hit by pitch making it first and second with no outs. The first run came across with an RBI double from redshirt senior Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter), making it 1-0.
With runners on second and third, a ball was popped up to left, but was muffed to allow Stidham to score from third. The third run came across during the next at bat with an RBI fielder's choice from sophomore Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern), putting it at 3-0.
Miami battled back in the bottom of the frame though, using a pair of hits after a leadoff walk to score two and make it 3-2 after one inning.
The offense continued in the second for EMU, this time with two outs. After two quick groundouts, the order went back to the top for Williams, who launched a solo homer to right field to make it 4-2. Delaplane rebounded in the second with a 1-2-3 frame to keep the score steady into the third.
While EMU's offense went ice cold over the next four innings, Delaplane grinded out the next three, getting out of a few jams to keep it 4-2 into the bottom of the sixth. In that inning, Miami had a leadoff triple come around on a groundout to tighten it to a 4-3 tally into the seventh.
Delaplane soldiered on into the seventh, getting two batters to strikeout to up his total to eight, but he exited with a runner on second. Miami was quick to jump on the pitching change, getting a pair of runs on back-to-back doubles to take their first lead, 5-4, into the eighth.
EMU had a golden opportunity in the eighth frame after getting their first base runners since the second inning, but stranded them at second and third to leave it to one last chance in the ninth.
They wouldn't waste a chance in that inning though, as a leadoff error by Miami came around to score on an RBI single by freshman Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) to tie it and extend the contest into the bottom half. Miami stranded a runner on second there, and sent the game to extras.
In the top of the tenth, EMU had two outs and just a runner on first, but Montgomery's gigantic two-run home run to right field gave Eastern a 7-5 lead into the last half of the tenth. Despite his initial struggles in the seventh, Beaton battled back to go three-up, three-down to lock down the win.
Eastern will get back into action tomorrow evening, April 7, for game two of the series against Miami. First pitch from McKie Field is set for 6 p.m.
