Trisha Trujillo picked up her eighth win of the season in a complete game effort
DETROIT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team played through brisk temperatures and rain in a non-conference clash with the University of Detroit Mercy, April 5, at Buysse Ballpark. Eastern used a 9-6 edge in the hit column to top the Titans, 3-1.
Turning in her fourth complete game of the season, junior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) put forth her best performance in nearly a month. Trujillo went 7.0 innings, striking out two and yielding six hits.
The Eagles tallied nine hits in the game, outhitting the Titans, 9-6. Junior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) led the offense with a 3-for-4 showing, while senior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) also turned in a multi-hit effort. Kriegshauser finished the day 2-for-3 with a run scored, an RBI, and a double.
After stranding four baserunners over the first four innings, sophomore Sam Saporito (Eastvale, Calif.-Eleanor Roosevelt) opened the fifth frame with a leadoff walk. With Saporito standing on second after a sacrifice bunt, Kriegshauser traded places with the sophomore catcher. Lacing a double to the fence in left center, Kriegshauser picked up an RBI and gave the Eagles a 1-0 advantage. Kriegshauser took third on a wild pitch, before senior Taylor Wagner's (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown) suicide squeeze brought the insurance run home, doubling EMU's lead. Sophomore Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) kept the inning going with an RBI single to push EMU's lead to three, 3-0, through four and a half innings of play.
A walk and a single gave the Titans life in the bottom half of the fifth, but Akles came up huge defensively to help Trujillo escape the jam. Charging a bunt down the third base line, Akles got the lead runner at third. Then, with runners on the corners, Akles fired home to keep the shutout intact, before catching an inning-ending pop out.
Detroit Mercy broke the shutout in the sixth, plating a run on two hits and an error. With two on and one away, the Titans ripped a hard hit ball to right, scoring one, but Kriegshauser got the batter out at first. Trujillo came back with a fly ball, which was easily handled by Kriegshauser in right to send the Eagles to the bat rack for their final time.
The Eagles went down in order in the seventh, setting up Trujillo to close things out. She did just that, putting together a 1-2-3 inning to give the Eagles the 3-1 victory.
Eastern returns to Mid-American Conference play this weekend, April 7-8, as it closes out a six-game road trip in Bowling Green, Ohio. The three-game cross-divisional series between EMU and Bowling Green State University gets underway Friday, April 7, with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
