Women's Swimming & Diving Lands 16 on Academic All-MAC Squad

The Eagles' 16 selection ranked tied for third in the conference

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team landed 16 student-athletes on the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, the league office announced Monday, April 3. The Eagles' 16 selection tied for third-most in the conference.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.

Earning the conference accolade was: sophomores Emilie Desnoyers, Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg),  Michal Liberman (Rosh Haayin, Israel-Begin),  Gabrielle Mace, Marissa Marion (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford), and Dora Vrcic, juniors Molly Miller (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Harrison), Hannah Newell (Ames, Iowa-Ames), Abby Saddler (Chanhassen, Minn.-Minnetonka), Alli Shereda (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser), Emily Tubbs (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe), and seniors Makenzie Garringer (Napoleon, Ohio), Carly Jackson (La Porte, Ind.-La Porte),  Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area), Mary Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central), and Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville).

Swimming in six meets for the Green and White, Desnoyers reeled in the accolade for the first time in her career. A psychology major with a 3.46 GPA, Desnoyers posted four top-three finishes over the course of the season. At the MAC Championships, she secured seventh-place in the 200 Butterfly with a career-best time of 2:01.59. Desnoyers also clocked in with a career-best time in the 200 Freestyle at the conference meet, turning in a time of 1:52.40.

Duncan, a marketing major with a 3.48 grade point average, swam in every meet for the Eagles before wrapping up the season at the NCAA Championships. Duncan defended her title at the MAC Championships, winning the  100 Breaststroke for the second consecutive season. The Galesburg, Ill. native was a force in the breaststroke for the Green and White, totaling 10 first-place finishes, including two sweeps of the 100 and 200 Breast, en route to First Team All-MAC honors.

Liberman competed in eight meets for EMU in her second season as an Eagle. She maintains a 3.53 grade point average as a journalism major, and was one of Eastern's top performers in the Fly this season. Posting four first-place finishes, Liberman wrapped up the year with a fifth-place mark in the 100 Fly and two other top-20 marks at the MAC Championships.

Diving in five meets, Mace finished the season with three top-five finishes. Mace holds a 3.90 grade point average while majoring in anthropology.

Marion swam in seven meets for the Eagles, notching three top-five finishes, as a speech language major with a 3.60 GPA. The Rockford, Mich. product turned in a pair of career-bests at the MAC Championships, clocking in with times of 52.52 and 5:12.51 in the 100 and 500 Free, respectively.

Swimming in eight meets for Eastern Michigan, Vrcic lands on the Academic All-MAC squad for the first time in her career. A sophomore with a 3.57 GPA, Vrcic claimed four top-three finishes, including two wins. Vrcic won the 100 Fly against Denison, Oct. 22, and in EMU's tri-dual with Tiffin and Wayne State, Jan. 21.

Miller dove in seven meets for the Green and White, all while boasting a 3.76 GPA as an exercise science major. Miller finished fifth on the 3-meter and 10th on the 1-meter at the MAC Championships after posting four top-five finishes throughout the regular season.

A sport management major with a 3.34 GPA, Newell swam in five meets for the Eagles. The Ames, Iowa native  closed out her season at the Ohio State Winter Invite, where she clocked in with two top-20 finishes.

Saddler, a paralegal major that maintains a 3.77 grade point average, competed in five meets for EMU before concluding her season at the Ohio State Winter Invite where she turned in two top-18 marks. Saddler set career-bests in both the 50 and 100 Free, as well as the 100 Breast at the Ohio State Winter Invite, while she also posted career-bests in the 200 Free and 200 Breast earlier in the season. 

Shereda dove in six meets for the Eagles, pacing EMU's efforts on the springboard. A business major with a 3.75 GPA, Shereda broke the 300-point barrier once and locked up seven top-three finishes. The Fraser, Mich. native swept the 1 and 3-meter twice, winning both events against Denison, Oct. 22, and Oakland, Nov. 12. At the MAC Championships, Shereda finished seventh on the 3-meter and 12th on the 1-meter.

Diving in seven meets, Tubbs posted five top-three finishes. She wrapped up a pair of top-18 marks at the MAC Championships, notching a 16th-place finish on the 3-meter and a 17th-place finish on the 1-meter. A biology major, Tubbs owns a 3.30 GPA.

Garringer, a therapeutic recreation major with a 3.85 grade point average, competed in six meets for the Eagles. Turning in four top-three finishes, Garringer concluded her career at the Michigan First Chance Meet. There, she claimed three first-place finishes and was later named MAC Swimmer of the Week for her performance.

A biology major with a 3.50 GPA, Jackson swam in five meets for EMU in her final season. Jackson turned in four top-three finishes over the course of the year, before wrapping up the season at the MAC Championships. At the conference meet, the La Porte, Ind. native secured a pair of top-10 finishes. In the 200 Fly, Jackson claimed third, while she won the consolation heat of the 100 Fly.

Mitcheltree made her first trip to the NCAA Championships this season to close the book on a sensational senior season in which she was named to the All-MAC First Team. An individualized studies major with a 3.42 grade point average, Mitcheltree swam in nine meets for Eastern Michigan and was named MAC Swimmer of the Week once. The Moon Twp., Pa. product broke her own program records in the 100 and 200 Backstroke. She posted a career-best time of 52.57 in the 100 Back at the MAC Championships, setting the program standard and winning the conference title. At the NCAA Championships, Mitcheltree clocked in with a career-best time of 1:56.61, again breaking her own program record.

Van Allen, a communications major with a 3.90 GPA, swam in eight meets for the Green and White. Turning in a total of 15 top-three finishes, Van Allen locked up nine first-place marks. At the MAC Championships, the Indianapolis, Ind. native claimed fifth in the 200 Individual Medley, fourth in the 200 Free, and 12th in the 1650 Free en route to Second Team All-MAC honors.

Rounding out EMU's selections is Wagner, an exercise science major with a 3.90 grade point average. Wagner competed in eight meets for the Eagles, posting 14 top-three finishes. A team captain for the Green and White, Wagner was named EMU's Exercise Science Major of the Year. A MAC Swimmer of the Week selection, Wagner concluded her career at the MAC Championships. There, she finished third in the 50 Free, 10th in the 200 Free, and 12th in the 100 Free. Wagner's career-best time of 22.58 at the conference meet also ranks as the top time in EMU laurels.
