PHILADELPHIA, Pa. & HILLSDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Following a busy day at the Penn Relays yesterday, the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team shifted its focus to the Gina Relays today, April 28. The majority of the team competed at Hillsdale, while two Eagles continued action at the Penn Relays.
Sophomore Jessica Harris (Slidell, La. – Slidell) represented Eastern in the 100m dash prelims at the Penn Relays. Harris clocked in at 11.77 seconds, just off her career-best, to nab 13th and narrowly miss a spot in the finals.
After competing in the long jump yesterday, junior Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia - Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) returned for the triple jump championship. There, the Ventspils, Lativa native turned in a seventh-place finish, notching a mark of 12.37 meters/ 40 feet 7-inches.
Close to home in Hillsdale, Mich., two Eagles posted personal-best marks in the 200m dash open. Redshirt sophomore Emiesha Burrell (Ecorse, Mich. – Anderson) secured 11th in 25.63 seconds, while sophomore Jocelyn Sharpe (Westerville, Ohio – Westerville North) clocked in at 26.60 seconds. Sharpe also ran in the 400m dash open, claiming an impressive sixth-place finish in a career-best 58.59 seconds.
The 800m run open featured three Eagles finish within the top-five. Leading the charge was junior Rebekah Branham (Circleville, Ohio – Circleville), who secured the silver in 2:13.88. Narrowly finishing behind Branham was fellow junior Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich. – Chippewa Valley), the bronze medalist with a time of 2:13.89. Finally, junior Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill. – Rockford Lutheran) claimed fourth with a personal-best time of 2:13.99.
The Eagles had a very strong showing in the 1500m run championship, as a pair of Eagles finished within the top-15. Sophomore Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. – Zionsville Community) impressed once again, claiming seventh in a career-best 4:23.48, pushing her to No. 8 in the EMU record books. Six spots behind her, junior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. – Davison) crossed the finish line in 13th with a time of 4:27.42, which stands at No. 10 in program history.
Freshman Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill. – Montini Catholic) donned the Green and White in the 100m hurdles open, securing a 16th-place finish in 16.75 seconds. The pole vault championship saw senior Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio – Fairmont) tally a fourth-place finish, notching a vault of 3.97 meters/ 13 feet 0.25-inches. Salzbrunn also competed in the high jump and the long jump, taking 16th and 23rd, respectively, posting personal-bests in both. Finally, senior Megan Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio – Woodmoore) secured sixth in the hammer throw, posting a launch of 48.98 meters/ 160 feet 8-inches.
The Green and White wrap up both the Penn Relays and the Gina Relays tomorrow, April 29. Both of the meets are slated to get rolling once again at 9 a.m. in Philadelphia and 10 a.m. in Hillsdale.
