Leads Slip Away as EMU Falls to NIU

4/28/2017 6:27:00 PM | Softball

Seniors Michelle Kriegshauser and Taylor Wagner picked up their 200th and 100th career hits

DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a doubleheader at Mary M. Bell Field to Northern Illinois University, Friday, April 28. The Eagles let a pair of three-run leads slip away, as the Green and White fell 13-5 and 8-3.

Game #1: Northern Illinois 13, Eastern Michigan 5 (5 inn.),
Bats were alive and well in the first game, as the two teams combined for 18 runs on 20 hits in five innings. Eastern registered nine hits, while Northern Illinois broke into double digits with 11 base knocks. Seniors Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) and Taylor Wagner (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown) paced the offensive output. Kriegshauser registered the lone multi-hit effort for the Green and White, going 2-for-3 on the day with a home run. The round-tripper, the 28th of her career, marked the 200th hit of Kriegshauser's career. Wagner turned in a 1-for-3 effort, including her 100th career knock.

Freshman Savanah White (Visalia, Calif.-Redwood) closed out a pitch-by-committee outing for the Eagles, as the righty went 3.0 innings with two strikeouts.

Eastern jumped all over Northern Illinois early, as Kriegshauser and Wagner came through with milestone marking hits to give the Eagles an early lead. Kreigshauser delivered a leadoff home run off the scoreboard in left field for the 200th hit of her career, while Wagner followed it up with a double. Coming to the plate with Wagner standing on second, sophomore Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) traded places with her, ripping an RBI double to left center. After moving to third on a sacrifice, Akles crossed the plate on junior Brandice Olmos' (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) RBI single to right, pushing Eastern Michigan's edge to 3-0 through half an inning.

Northern Illinois came back with an explosive first, sending 14 batters to the plate. The Huskies used an EMU error, three walks, and seven hits to manufacture eight runs, taking an 8-3 lead into the second.

Kriegshauser singled with two outs in the second, but the Green and White could not do much with it, turning things over the Huskies. NIU tacked on three in the second and one in the first, to take a 12-3 lead with three innings in the books.

The Eagles found their offense in the fourth, cranking out a trio of hits to cut into the Huskies' edge. Junior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) got things going with an infield single, before moving into third on freshman Ariana Chretien's (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) base knock. Stepping to the plate with runners on second and third, freshman Danielle Rico (Moreno Valley, Calif.-Grand Terrace) lifted a double over the head of NIU's right fielder for a two-run double, cutting NIU's lead to seven, 12-5.

Despite a strong outing in relief for White, Northern mustered a run in the fifth to take game one, 13-5, in five innings.

Game #2: Northern Illinois 8, Eastern Michigan X
Making just her fifth career start, White turned in the best outing of her young EMU career. White tossed a career-high 5.2 innings, while striking out one.

Eastern's offense could not solve NIU's Tara Thacker, as the Eagles were outhit, 10-2, in an error-filled game that featured a combined five miscues.

A leadoff walk by Hostetler set the table for a three-run inning for the Eagles. Rico followed it up with a single and took second on the play as Hostetler scooted into third. With two on and no outs, sophomore Sam Saporito (Eastvale, Calif.-Eleanor Roosevelt) brought Hostetler across the plate on a squeeze. From there, sophomore Lucy Lopez (Bakersfield, Calif.-Stockdale) cleared the bases with a double down the left field line, capping EMU's second turn to bat.

Eastern Michigan's lead was short-lived, as Northern Illinois responded with a three-run second to even the score at three with two innings complete.

Following a scoreless third, NIU led off the fourth with a solo shot to left to take its first lead of the game, 4-3. White responded, retiring the next three Huskies she faced to send the Eagles back to the plate.

Unable to do much in their half of the fifth, the Eagles saw the deficit grow to two. The Huskies tacked on an insurance run via a bases loaded walk to push their lead to two, 5-3.

Northern Illinois put the game out of reach in the sixth, pushing three runs across on three hits and an error to extend its lead to 8-3.

Coming to the plate for the final time, Eastern Michigan went down in order, finalizing the defeat, 8-3.

EMU and NIU finish the three-game series tomorrow, April 29, with a 10 a.m. first pitch at Mary M. Bell Field.
