EMU went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position
NOTRE DAME, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team was unable to capitalize on several scoring chances in a 5-0 defeat to the University of Notre Dame Wednesday evening, April 26 at Frank Eck Stadium. EMU (17-24) pounded out nine hits, but went just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position in the game.
The Eagles went with a pitching staff by committee approach, as six pitchers saw time on the rubber throughout the night. Four tossed scoreless frames, led by freshman James Harness (Huber Heights, Ohio-Wayne) who threw three scoreless with three strikeouts.
The offensive output was led by a pair of three-hit days from senior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) and freshman Drake Peggs (Knightstown, Ind.-Knightstown Community). It marked the fifth three-hit game of Montgomery's season, while it was a career-high for Peggs.
The first three innings went by without a run as EMU's starter, Harness, went the first three, only allowing two hits, while striking out three.
Notre Dame (20-22) broke the shutout in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff solo home run off the relief pitcher, junior Justin McMurtrey (Redding, Calif.-Shasta (Butte C.C.)), making it 1-0 into the fifth inning. After the solo shot, McMurtrey settled down in the fifth, going three-up, three-down to maintain the one-run game.
While EMU's bats continued to sputter, EMU's arms kept rolling as sophomore Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) entered in the sixth, notching a strikeout in a scoreless inning to keep it 1-0 into the final three innings. Senior Justin Thompson (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth (Concordia)) was the next Eagle hurler out of the pen in the seventh, and he faced the minimum after a double play erased a double to keep the game tight.
In the eighth, EMU got runners on first and second after a pair of singles, the first being Peggs' third hit, but they were stranded once again on a groundout, EMU's sixth runner left stranded in scoring position. The Fighting Irish finally broke through on EMU's pitching in the bottom of the eighth, tagging the Eagles for four runs on four hits to put it at a 5-0 tally into EMU's final at bat.
Eastern wound up loading up the bases in the top of the ninth on two singles and a walk, but Notre Dame worked around it to end the game and maintain the 5-0 shutout win.
EMU returns to the field this weekend for a Mid-American Conference series against the University at Buffalo. The three-game set will begin with a 3 p.m. first pitch, Friday, April 28.
