Men's Golf Looks to Take Back the MAC Championship Crown

NASHPORT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team will host the 71st annual Mid-American Conference Championship, Friday through Sunday, April 28-30, at The Virtues Golf Club located in Nashport, Ohio. The three-day, 72-hole event will feature the nine MAC schools which sponsor men's golf – Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami, Northern Illinois, Ohio, and Toledo.
The Green and White will tee off at 8:40 a.m. Friday morning and will be paired with rival KSU. EMU is set to start the second round, also at the first tee, at 1:10 p.m. Rounds three and four are set for Saturday and Sunday. Fans can follow all the action via Golfstat Live Scoring.
The par-72, 7,243-yard parkland-style course was designed by renowned golf course architect Arthur Hills to blend seamlessly with its pristine natural surrounding, just 40 miles from downtown Columbus. Formerly known as Longaberger Golf Club, the Virtues Golf Club is Ohio's No. 1 public golf course and the No. 74 course in Top 100 Public Courses in America by Golf Digest.
The MAC Men's Golf Championships has been played on the Nashport, Ohio course three previous times; first in 2008 and most recently in 2013. At the 2008 MAC Championships, the Eagles captured the title with a four round total of 1,171.
The Eagles finished fourth at the 2016 MAC Championship posting a three-day cumulative score of 1,172 (288-295-296-293). Kent State captured its 23rd team title in program history with a four-round score of 16-over par 1,152 (288-291-285-288). Senior Kyle Rodes (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) paced the Green and White with a three-over par 287 (70-77-70-70) to finish in a tie for second with KSU's Ian Holt and NIU's Joo-Young Lee.
The Golden Flashes are ranked No. 12 in Golfstat's national rankings followed by Eastern Michigan (102), Ball State (132), Akron (135), Bowling Green (138), Toledo (154), Ohio (167), Northern Illinois (169), and Miami (185).
Playing this weekend for EMU will be Rodes, senior Jared Multer (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview-Grand Rapids C.C.), junior Nic Ross (Dundas, Ontario, Canada- Highland Secondary), sophomore Beau Breault (Hartland, Mich.- Hartland), and senior Philippe Weppernig (Lucerne, Switzerland-Kantonsschule Alpenquai Luzern-Owens C.C.).
The winner will receive the MAC's automatic bid to one of six NCAA Regional sites May 15-17. The 2017 regional sites are: University Club in Baton Rouge, La. (LSU), The Grove in Murfreesboro, Tenn. (Middle Tennessee), the Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind. (Purdue), Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif. (Stanford), the UT Golf Club in Austin, Texas (Texas), and the National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash. (Washington).
The NCAA finals are scheduled to begin on May 26 and will be hosted by NIU at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
