Women's Tennis Comes Up Short In Regular Season Finale

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team fell short against Miami University Sunday, April 23, on home ground in its last match of the 2016-17 regular season. Fighting through three doubles and six single competitions, the Eagles dropped a 4-3 decision on the day.
Beginning in doubles action, the Green and White dropped a pair of matches to fall behind 1-0. Andrea Martinovska (Plzn. Czech Republic) and Anna Velva (Sofia, Bulguria) were the only tandem to walk away with a victory, as they defeated Hannah Shteyn and A. Vasiukhina, 6-3, at No. 2 doubles.
In singles action, Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Columbia) and Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia- Khikhani) were the only Eagles to come away with victories. Ribero took Andreea Badileanu two straight, whereas Gogvadze came back after losing her first set to defeat Nelli Ponomareva 2-1 in the series.
"Close loss today," added Head Coach Ryan Ray. "I'm proud of the fight we gave after being short-handed most of the MAC season. This shows us we can be a real force with everyone returning next season and getting back to full strength."
The Green and White end their season 6-17 overall, and 1-7 in Mid-American conference play. The team will not losing any players due to graduation and will come back full-fledged next season.
