YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University rowing team gets back on the water this weekend with a meet at the George Mason Invite, Sunday, April 23.
EMU jumps down to Virginia for the three-conference showdown. There, the Eagles will battle teams from the Atlantic-10, Big 12, as well as their own league, the Colonial Athletic Association. The A-10 will be represented by host George Mason, Dayton, and George Washington. The Big 12 will have Kansas, Old Dominion, and West Virginia in attendance. Finally, joining the Eagles from the CAA will be Buffalo and Delaware.
The invite will have a unique format this season, featuring the same form as the conference challenges commonly seen in college basketball.
In the morning sessions, Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ boats will participate in conference heats in which the boats will race against other teams from their league. The top finisher from each league will head to the A Final to compete against the top team from the other two conferences.
The second heat finisher from each conference will participate in a B final against the second finishers from the other two conferences and so on in a format that should lead to competitive races down the stretch. Regardless of heat finish, each boat will have a chance to score points for their home conference in finals action.
The winner of each Varsity 8+ final will earn nine points for its home conference, the second finisher will earn six points and the third will get three. That scoring format will occur in the B Final and C Final as well. The Second Varsity 8+ scoring format will be 6-4-2, while the Varsity 4+ format is 3-2-1 in the A, B, and C Finals.
The conference with the most points at the end of the finals series will be declared the fastest participating conference and the Mason Invite Champion.
The weekend will also give EMU and Buffalo the chance to race for the 12th and final Harvey Cup. Eastern will look to defend its title from the Bulls after taking its fourth Harvey Cup last season, and second in a row.
The Harvey Cup is named in recognition and memory of the University at Buffalo's former Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator Nan Harvey, who passed away in September of 2003 after courageously battling cancer for over three years. EMU and Buffalo are the only Mid-American Conference institutions to sponsor rowing as a varsity sport. As a result, both joined the Colonial Athletic Association in the 2012-13 season to compete for a league title.
