Without their top player, the Eagles took WMU to the wire
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team continued its Mid-American Conference schedule Sunday, April 2, when it hosted Western Michigan University at the Claudia Wasik Tennis Complex in Ypsilanti. The Eagles (6-12, 1-3 MAC) dropped a 4-3 decision to the Broncos (8-9, 2-2 MAC) without their No. 1 singles player.
With Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) sidelined due to injury, Eastern Michigan had to adjust its lineup. Moving to No. 1 doubles, the duo of Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikani) and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) dropped a 6-2 decision, while Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) teamed up for the first time this season to defeat Denise Azcui and Olivia Myers, 6-2, at No. 2. With the doubles point on the line, Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) and Renu Sharma (Fardabad, India) dropped a 6-3 decision at No. 3 to give the Broncos a 1-0 advantage.
The Eagles saw their deficit grow quickly as both Sharma and Veleva dropped 6-1, 6-0 decisions at No. 4 and 6 singles, respectively. Trailing 3-0, Gogvadze moved up to No. 1 singles in Mayerova's absence to pick up EMU's first point with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Melina Lyubomirova. With the next final, the Broncos locked up the win as Azcui defeated Barcelo Almoyna, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5. The Green and White continued to fight as Ribero came away with a 6-4, 6-4, win over Katja Fevralev in the No. 3 singles spot and Martinovska knocked off Myers at No. 2, 2-6, 7-5, 1-0.
"Tough challenge without Marie at the top today," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We had some different doubles lineups and played a bit more relaxed today. The top of the lineup played strong and picked up some good wins. We need to keep competing and we will break through."
The Eagles return to action Friday, April 7, when they travel to Muncie, Ind. to square off with Ball State University. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
