Power Display Not Enough in Defeat to Oakland

EMU hit three home runs for the third consecutive game

ROCHESTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Despite another offensive onslaught, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team had its four-game winning streak snapped at the hands of Oakland University, 14-11, Tuesday, April 18 at OU Baseball Field. The Eagles (16-21) scored double digit runs in their third straight game and have totaled 43 over their last four contests.

EMU used the long ball to its advantage, cranking out three of them for the third straight game. Leading the offensive output was redshirt senior Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) who had a huge day with three-hits, including a double, his third career two-home run game, as well as a career-high five RBI's. It was the second straight time that a player hit two homers in a game, and third time that has happened this season. Mioduszewski now has four homers on the season and 16 for his EMU career. The five RBI's also put him over 100 runs batted in for his EMU career, as he now has 102.

Fellow senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) had EMU's other round-tripper, a three-run shot, to complete a two-hit, three-RBI day. It was his third of the season. Finally, senior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) went 1-for-3 with an RBI double and two walks. In doing so, he extended his team-best reached base streak to 20 straight games.

The Eagles got the scoring started in the first inning with a bang. After two walks put runners on base, Peterson launched a three-run shot to left center to give EMU the early lead. It was short lived though, as the Golden Grizzlies (7-26) struck back with five runs in the bottom of the first on just two hits, one of which was a three-run home run, to make it 5-3 after the first.

Eastern got one run closer in the second inning with a two-out double from Stidham. After a walk to junior Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), Stidham cranked his team-leading ninth double of the season down the left field line, scoring Williams and making it 5-4.

Oakland kept the pressure on in the second, going for three more on another three-run homer, putting the tally at 8-4 through two. EMU kept battling in the third, getting a pair back, first on a Mioduszewski solo home run to left center. After that, Peterson drew a walk, and got to third on wild pitches. Following a sophomore Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) walk, he got caught in a pickle between first and second, allowing Peterson to score, and make it 8-6.

After senior Justin Thompson (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth (Concordia)) worked the first scoreless frame of the game in the bottom of the third, EMU recaptured the lead in the top of the fourth with another display of power. After two quick outs, EMU drew a walk and reached on an error to bring Mioduszewski to the dish. His bat stayed hot with his second home run of the day to left center, giving EMU the lead back, 9-8.

Thompson continued to mow down Oakland batters, getting through the fourth and fifth innings with no further damage, maintaining the lead into the sixth. There, EMU got some padding to the lead, as Mioduszewski came through again, notching an RBI double for his fifth RBI of the game, pushing Eastern's lead to 10-8.

The back and forth affair continued in the bottom of the sixth, as OU sprung for three more runs to take the lead back, 11-10, with three innings to play. Oakland tallied another in the seventh to make it a two-run contest with just two to play.

EMU manufactured a run in the eighth to make it a one-run game. A lead-off pinch hit single from redshirt senior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) got it started, and he did the rest on the base paths. First a failed pickoff attempt to first scooted away, advancing him to second. One batter later, Gill swiped third, and the throw went into left field, allowing Gill to score and make it 12-11.

The deficit didn't last though as OU tacked on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the ninth, placing EMU down three into the final at bat. A three-up, three-down ninth ended the game and the 14-11 defeat.

EMU gets back into action this weekend when it heads west for a three-game set with in-state rival Western Michigan. The series from Kalamazoo gets started Friday, April 21, with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
