Williams' Walk-Off Caps Series Sweep of Bobcats

EMU has won four straight, and moves to 7-2 to start MAC play
It was the second walk-off winner this season for the Eagles (16-20, 7-2) who have now won four straight and have matched their best start in league play since 2008, when the eventual MAC champions started 7-2 in the MAC.
The offense was once again the story in a back and forth game that featured five lead changes. EMU pounded out 15 hits to score the 12 runs, including three home runs. It was the first time EMU has scored at least 12 runs in back-to-back games since 2014.
Leading the way once again was senior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra), who wrapped up his monster weekend with another incredible performance. The senior went 3-for-5, including two more home runs, to put his team-leading total at eight on the season.
The walk-off hero, Williams, had an impressive day himself, finishing with a three-run home run to go along with his clutch hit, totaling a career-high four RBIs. It was his second round-tripper of the season. Freshman Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) remained red-hot, finishing with his second straight three-hit game, including two doubles, to up his hitting streak to 10 games.
It was a tough go of it on the mound for both sides as the wind was howling out to right field for the second straight game. It was a good outing for senior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) though, as he earned his third win of the season after pitching a quick three-up, three-down top of the ninth to maintain the tie for Williams' heroics.
The Bobcats (16-19, 3-6 MAC) got things started with a huge first inning, going for five runs on five hits to get the early advantage. Freshman James Harness (Huber Heights, Ohio-Wayne) entered from the pen with two outs in the first frame, and proceeded to get through the next three innings to maintain the score into the bottom of the fourth.
In the fourth inning, EMU returned the favor from the first inning, springing for six runs of their own, mostly using the long ball. It started with a lead-off dinger from Montgomery to dead center to get EMU on the board. Following back-to-back walks and a steal of third by senior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)), runners were on the corners for redshirt senior Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter). The senior delivered with a single to score runner number two. One batter later, another senior, Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw), smacked a single of his own to score the third runner of the frame.
Following the second out of the fourth, it was Williams' turn at the dish, and the lefty used the high wind blowing out to right field to his advantage, crushing a three-run bomb to put a capper on a six-run inning to give EMU the lead, 6-5, after four.
Ohio had the immediate response with some power of their own on a solo home run to knot things up a six apiece in the fifth. The power display continued in the bottom of the inning as Montgomery parked his second straight homer, this time down the line in right, to give EMU the brief 7-6 advantage.
The ball continued to fly out of Oestrike in the sixth as, after an RBI fielder's choice, Ohio got their second homer of the day, this time a three-run shot, to make it a 10-7 contest. The two teams continued trading blows in the bottom half of the inning, as EMU sprung for three more to tie it once again.
A leadoff double from Jones got it started, followed by a hit by pitch to put two on for sophomore Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern). The infielder doubled to right to drive in Jones and make it second and third with no outs. One batter later, redshirt senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) knocked in the tying runs with a single to center, making it all square at 10 with three innings to play.
Ohio didn't wait around to take its third lead of the day, smacking their third home run of the contest, a solo job to right, to put it at an 11-10 tally. The Eagles had no response after the stretch leaving it a one-run game with two to play.
EMU tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with a clutch two-out hit from a pinch hitter, freshman Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline). With runners on second and third after a single, intentional walk, and passed ball, Owings came off the bench against OU's closer, and hit a little nubber toward shortstop, who was not able to make the throw to first in time, scoring the tying run.
In the ninth, Beaton came on to hold the game, and did his job with a quick 1-2-3 inning, only needing 15 pitches, to take it to the bottom of the ninth. Still facing Ohio's closer, EMU got the first two batters on via a Gill single and Schuemann walk to bring Williams up. The lefty got it done with the single up the middle to score the speedy Gill, walking off with the thrilling 12-11 win.
EMU now begins a nine-game road trip, beginning with a quick jaunt up to Rochester for game two of the season series against Oakland University. First pitch from OU Baseball Stadium is set for 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 18.
