On a blustery day at Oestrike Stadium, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team outlasted Ohio University, 12-9, Saturday, April 15. The win clinched EMU's (15-20, 6-2 MAC) third consecutive Mid-American Conference series to start the season and marks the Eagles' best start in MAC play since EMU began the conference slate 7-2 back in 2008.

With the wind howling out all game, the two teams combined for 33 hits, including five home runs. EMU finished with 18 hits as a squad, marking its season-high, as everyone in the starting lineup notched at least one hit.

Leading the offensive outpour was senior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) as the slugger continued his career-year. He finished with a three-hit, and career-best five-RBI game, including his team-leading sixth home run of the season. Not to be outdone, junior Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) tallied the second four-hit game of his EMU career, finishing 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Elsewhere, senior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) parked his second three-run home run in as many games in a two-hit day. It was his fifth on the season, and increased his reached base streak to 18 games. Finally, freshman Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) upped his team-leading hit streak to nine games with a three-hit performance, marking a new career-high.

On the mound, the nine runs ended a 16-game streak for EMU pitching of allowing six or less runs in a game. Earning his first win of the season was sophomore Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) after he went the final four innings in relief, while striking out four.

The first inning was an eventful one as Ohio led off with a home run, followed by a double and single to take a quick 2-0 lead. Eastern responded immediately though with a two-out, two-run home run from Montgomery. After a two-out walk, Montgomery got the ball up in the jet stream to right, and it cleared the fence just left of the foul pole to tie the game at two apiece.

EMU kept the onslaught on in the second with three more runs on four hits. Back-to-back singles from redshirt seniors Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) and Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) started it off and, one batter later, Williams singled to drive in one and bring Montgomery to the dish. He stayed hot with a double down the left field line, scoring both runners, and making it 5-2 EMU after just two innings.

Ohio battled back in the third inning, responding with two runs of its own on a double and single to tighten up the tally at 5-4 through three. Following a clean fourth, Ohio kept it up in the fifth with two more runs on their second home run of the day, to put the score at 6-5 at the halfway point.

Feldman entered in the sixth in relief, and got a quick inning with a strikeout to take it to the bottom of the sixth. There, the back-and-forth game continued as Stidham homered for the second straight game, this time a three-run shot, to catapult EMU back ahead, 8-6 into the final three innings.

The righty, Feldman, continued to keep the Bobcat bats at bay through the next two innings, retiring eight straight, including two by strikeout in the eighth, to keep the two-run lead into the bottom of the eighth.

In EMU's final turn at the dish, the Eagles got some much needed insurance as the bats stayed hot. Williams and Stidham led off with singles to put runners on the corners for Montgomery. The slugger notched his fifth RBI on a single to right to make it 9-6.

After the second out of the inning was recorded, sophomore Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) came through with a double to left that scored EMU's 10th run, and made it a four-run game. The next batter, freshman Drake Peggs (Knightstown, Ind.-Knightstown), laid down a perfect squeeze bunt that scored Montgomery initially, but on the failed throw to first, Schuemann made the heads up play, scampering home to get EMU a 12-6 advantage into the ninth.

As it would turn out, EMU would need those insurance runs, as Ohio had one last comeback attempt on a three-run home run to center field, tightening the gap to 12-9 with one out. Feldman was held steady though, getting a strikeout and groundout to seal the three-run victory.

EMU will go for the series sweep over OU tomorrow, April 16. First pitch from Oestrike Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
