Michelle Kriegshauser moved into fifth in MAC history with 53 doubles
MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team opened a three-game set versus Mid-American Conference West Division-leading Ball State University, Friday, April 14, at the BSU Softball Complex. A season-high nine strikeouts kept the EMU (14-24, 2-11 MAC) offense at bay, as the Eagles were defeated, 8-0.
Senior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) tallied two of Eastern's five hits, going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles. With a pair of two-baggers, Kriegshauser's career total moved to 53, the fifth most in MAC history. As a team, the Green and White were out-hit 12-5.
Sophomore Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) made her 10th start of the year, going 4.0 innings. Miranda was tagged for four runs on eight hits, while the Wilmington, Calif. native fanned two.
Kreigshauser broke the game open with a leadoff double off the left-center wall, but the Eagles failed to do anything with it, stranding one.
Ball State responded with a threat of its own, putting two on with nobody out, but the defense helped Miranda escape the jam without any damage to maintain the scoreless draw.
The Cardinals picked up where they left off in the second, putting two on with one away, before Miranda and the Eagles defense stepped up. Miranda painted the outside edge, getting a strikeout for out number two before Kriegshauser throw a runner out at the plate to end the second and keep the game scoreless into the third.
Ball State took the lead in the third, pushing four runs on three hits and two EMU errors. A leadoff single moved into second with a stolen base before coming all the way home on the same play due to a pair of miscues by the Eagles. A light tapper to the right side plated another run and a two-run double extended BSU's lead to 4-0 with Eastern coming to the plate in the fourth.
Eastern's bats got going in the fourth, as junior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) ripped a single up the middle. Sophomore Amanada Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) dropped a duck snort just inside the line in left, putting two on with one out, but a shot down the third base line was knocked down, allowing BSU to get the force out to end the threat.
A two-run home run pushed Ball State's advantage to 6-0 in the fifth, before a two-run knock gave BSU the walk-off win over EMU by a final tally of 8-0.
Eastern Michigan and Ball State go back at it tomorrow, April 15, with a doubleheader to close out the series. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
