RICHMOND, Va. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's rowing team's 1-V8+ boat took home the first-ever Colonial Athletic Association Boat of the Week honors, the association announced today, April 12. The Eagles took home the prestigious inaugural award over the five other squads in the CAA after a big weekend at the 22nd annual Lubbers Cup this past weekend, April 8-9.
The Eagles' 1V8+ boat had a huge weekend at the Lubbers Cup, in Spring Lake, Mich. The team took part in three races, and claimed victory in all three. They began the weekend under calm conditions with a win over Big Ten foes, Purdue and Ohio State, clocking in with a 6:41.0 time, 12 seconds better than the second place Boilermakers.
In the second race on Saturday, the Eagles had to deal with a fast cross wind, but EMU still won with a 6:42.1 time, defeating boats from host GVSU by six seconds, and Marquette by over a minute. In a blustery Sunday, high winds canceled all but two races, but the 1V8+ was able to hit the water for a shortened race. In that race, they defeated Drake and Marquette with a time of 3:42.6. The next closest boat from Drake clocked in nine seconds behind EMU.
For their efforts, the boat consisting of coxswain Savannah Theisen (Saline, Mich.-Saline), Addison Oblanas (Seattle, Wash.-Seattle Academy), Samantha Allen (Pomona N.J.-Absegami), Stephanie Parker (Valparaiso, Ind.-Valparaiso), Rebekah Wheeler (Newark, Ohio-Newark), Jamie Rittenhouse (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Saline), Baylee Kinkade (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central), Sarah Anderson (Cleveland, Ohio-Charles F. Bush), and Caitlyn Maguire (Dayton, Ohio-Vandalia Butler), took home the Nancy Lubbers Cup as the top Varsity 8+ on the weekend.
In total, EMU won seven of nine events on the weekend at the Lubbers Cup. In addition to the Nancy Lubbers Cup, the Novice 8+ boat, notched the Michele Golightly Cup as the top Novice 8+ boat after they won both competitions they competed in.
Eastern now has a couple of weeks away from competition before hitting the water again at the George Mason Invite, Sunday, April 23. Action from Occoquan, Va. will run throughout the day.
