EMU has now lost four straight
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Lack of production at the plate and the long ball plagued the Eastern Michigan University softball team, as the Eagles dropped their series finale against the University of Toledo, Wednesday, April 12, in midweek Mid-American Conference play. Eastern mustered just two hits, while Toledo pounded out 10 to hand the Eagles a 4-0 setback.
Sophomore Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) and freshman Ariana Chretien (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) combined for EMU's only two hits of the afternoon, as the Eagle offense stuckout seven times.
In the circle, EMU used three different pitchers. Junior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) took the loss after going 4.0 innings. Trujillo gave up three runs, two of which were earned, on six hits, while striking out one.
The Eagles found themselves in an early jam in the top of the second, as the Rockets put two on via a double and walk with two outs. Trujillo fell behind in the count early against UT's Ashley Maynard at the plate, but battled back to get an inning-ending K, escaping the threat.
Toledo's Chandler Rice belted a solo shot over the fence in left center to take a 1-0 lead in the third. The one-run home run was the lone hit of the frame for the Rockets, as freshman Danielle Rico (Moreno Valley, Calif.-Grand Terrace) made a pair of outstanding plays at shortstop, before a fly ball to left retired UT to bring EMU back to the plate.
Eastern Michigan pieced together a scoring opportunity in the bottom half of the third, but a pair of strikeouts and a runner caught stealing left a pair of Eagles on base. The opportunity proved to be the best scoring chance of the day for the Eagles, who managed just two base runners from that point on. The lone Eagles to reach base over the final four innings did so via walk, as the Rockets tacked on three more runs to clip the Green and White, 4-0.
Eastern hits the road this weekend, for a MAC West Division set against Ball State. The series starts with a 3 p.m. pitch Friday, April 14, in Muncie, Ind.
