The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a marathon 2-1 decision in 13 innings to the No. 13 ranked University of Michigan Tuesday evening, April 11, at Ray Fisher Stadium. It was the fourth walk off loss for EMU (12-20) on the season, and the second to a nationally ranked opponent after dropping a 3-2 decision to then No. 6 Louisville, March 4.

The pitching carried the day for the Eagles, as two hurlers combined to go the extra inning distance. Senior Kevin Shul (Albuquerque, N.M.-Albuquerque Academy (College of Southern  Nevada)) went the first six innings in his second start of the season, marking his career-best innings pitched at EMU. He only gave up one run on seven hits while striking out four.

Taking the tough loss in relief was freshman James Harness (Huber Heights, Ohio-Wayne), after he gave up two hits, including the walk off hit, in the 13th. Prior to that, he went six innings, only yielding two hits, and struck out two.

Offensively, EMU mustered eight hits on the day, spread among seven batters. Leading the way was senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) who had a two-hit contest, including his fifth double. The lone RBI came off the bat of freshman Devin Hager (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) on an RBI single.

Michigan (26-7) was first to strike in the second inning, getting a run to cross on a double play after back-to-back singles. Shul escaped with no further damage though, keeping it a one run game after two.

The senior kept the one-run game through five innings after three-straight scoreless, striking out four, but EMU was unable to break through on the offensive side. The Eagles had a scoring chance in the sixth, getting runners on the corners with two outs, but the runner was picked off third to end the threat and keep it 1-0.

EMU finally got the offense going in the seventh, all starting with a pinch-hit double from Peterson. One batter later, Hager singled to center to drive in the run and tie the game at one each into the stretch.

Harness entered to pitch the seventh, picking up where Shul left off with a one-two-three inning to take it to the eighth. He kept cruising in the eighth, taking it to the final frame. There, despite a leadoff double, Harness got the next three outs to take it to extra innings.

In the 10th, Harness went three-up, three down again to retire his sixth straight and maintain the tie into the 11th inning. In that stanza, a runner reached on an error, but Harness was able to retire the other three batters to take it to the 12th.

The Eagles got a runner to third in the 12th inning, but he was stranded there on a called third strike to end the scoring chance. Another Wolverine base runner reached in the 12th on a double, but Harness was able to get though without any other base runners reaching to take the contest to the 13th. In the 13th, Michigan got a pair of hits, including a double, to walk off the game and the 2-1 defeat.

Eastern returns to the diamond tomorrow evening, April 12, for a contest against The Ohio State University. First pitch from Bill Davis Stadium is set for 6:35 p.m.
