Sophomore Nicolle Miranda tossed her first shutout of the season
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team split a doubleheader with Mid-American Conference foe, the University of Akron, Saturday, April 1, at Varsity Field. The Eagles (13-16, 2-3 MAC) rode a complete game shutout to top the Zips (13-18, 2-3 MAC), 3-0, in game one, before dropping the second leg, 10-1.
Game #1: Eastern Michigan 3, Akron 0
Sophomore Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) turned in one of her most efficient outings of the season, going the distance and tossing just 86 pitches to lock up the complete game shutout. Moving to 4-4 on the season, Miranda posted her first shutout of the season, and fanned two.
EMU tallied five hits, all by different Eagles to out-hit Akron, 5-4. Junior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) extended her hitting streak to 11 games with an RBI single, capping a 1-for-2 showing at the dish.
Eastern Michigan erupted for three runs on four hits in the sixth inning, breaking the scoreless tie ahead of Akron's last turn at bat. Senior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) got a one-out rally going with a rocket through the left side, before senior Taylor Wagner (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown) blooped a single into center to put two on with one away for Olmos. Olmos ripped a full count delivery back up the middle, scoring one and breaking the scoreless tie. Sophomores Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) and Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) added insurance runs on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to give Miranda a three-run cushion into the seventh.
Not wasting any time, Miranda needed just eight pitches to close out the game. After a strikeout, Miranda came back and induced a fly out and pop out to wrap up the victory, 3-0.
Game #2: Eastern Michigan 1, Akron 10
The Eagles used three pitchers in the second game of the twin bill, with junior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) getting the starting nod. Trujillo only lasted 1.2 innings, surrendering two runs on four hits. Miranda and senior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) carried EMU into the seventh, where Trujillo reentered to close things out.
Offensively, the Eagles were outhit 13-5, as five different Eagles picked up hits. Akles provided the lone run of the game for the Green and White with her fourth homer of the game.
Kelly Hysong carried the Zips offense, belting two home runs for a combined five RBI's to give Akron a 5-0 edge through two and a half innings of play.
Eastern belted its own round-tripper in the fourth, breaking up the shutout bid as Akles blasted her fourth home run of the season over the fence in right center to cut the deficit to four, 5-1.
Akron got the run back in the sixth, capitalizing on an errant throw by the Eagles. With a runner on second, the Zips swiped third and scooted home as the throw sailed down the line in left.
Trailing 6-1, the Green and White stranded Wagner following a one-out single to send the game into the final frame.
The Zips pushed their lead to nine with a four-run seventh, behind three hits, to put the game all but out of reach, 10-1, with EMU coming to the plate for the final time.
The Green and White could not muster a hit in the seventh, dropping the game by a final score of 10-1.
The Eagles close out the weekend series tomorrow, April 2, at 1 p.m.
