Early Lead for Eagles Not Enough Against Butler

4/1/2017 3:13:00 PM | Baseball

EMU led 2-0 after two before BU scored six unanswered

CHICAGO (EMUEagles.com) – Despite an early lead, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team ultimately fell, 6-2, to Butler University Saturday afternoon, April 1, at Cougar Stadium on the campus of Chicago State University. The Eagles (7-18) led 2-0 through two, but the Bulldogs (18-7) scored six unanswered to take the game.

The Eagles tallied eight hits in the contest, spread among seven players. Highlighting the day was senior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) who blasted a solo home run in the first inning, his third of the season, which ties for the team lead. It was also the 11th for his EMU career. Fellow senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) notched his second straight two-hit affair with a pair of singles.

On the mound, it was an efficient outing for senior Justin Thompson (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth (Concordia)) in relief. He went the final five innings, a career-high, and only gave up two runs while striking out four.

EMU got the scoring started in the third with a bang as Stidham cranked a solo home run to right field. His third of the season got EMU the early 1-0 lead. The lead doubled in the second on a nice piece of hitting by sophomore Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern). With runners on first and second after a walk and single, the sophomore singled up the middle to plate a run and put it at 2-0. Schuemann now has six hits and five RBIs in his last four games.

The lead was short lived though, as BU sprung for two runs on a bases loaded double in the top of the third, tying it at two apiece. They went on to take the lead in the fifth on a two-run throwing error by the Eagles, putting it at a 4-2 tally midway through the contest.

EMU had a good chance in the bottom of the fifth, loaded the bases with just one out, but Butler stepped up and left them stranded to keep EMU off the board. Butler then turned around and scored on a pair of sacrifice flies in the sixth, giving BU its largest lead, 6-2 after six.

Despite Thompson's pitching efforts the rest of the way, EMU only got two base runners over the final three innings to seal the four-run defeat.

The Eagles will complete their Chicago swing tomorrow, April 2, with doubleheader action from Cougar Stadium. The day begins at 11 a.m. EST with game two versus Butler, followed by the weekend finale approximately 30 minutes after against Chicago State.
