CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team completed day one of the 2017 Mid-American Conference Championships, Saturday, March 4, at the McLeod Center.
EMU had a successful day, with six of 10 wrestlers still alive heading into day two, including redshirt junior Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan), who is into tomorrow's heavyweight title bout by winning his two matches today. By doing so, he locked up his second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. Hutchison will look for EMU's first individual MAC title since 2009, when John McClure won the 197 lbs. weight class.
Both of Hutchison's wins today came in overtime, as he won both in the tiebreaker round with takedowns. First off, he avenged his loss earlier in the season to J.J. Everard of Northern Iowa when he notched a takedown in the first tiebreaker round to get to the semifinals.
There, he met with Austin Myers of Missouri, who he defeated in the dual earlier this season. In the second OT period, Hutchison led with riding time, and got a takedown for good measure to secure his spot in the finals with the 5-2 win. Hutchison became the first Eagle heavyweight to get to the finals of the MAC tournament since David Wade took runner-up honors in 2010.
Two other Eagles won their quarterfinal bouts, with redshirt freshmen Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) and Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake) both notching wins in their first MAC championship appearances. Gonser took down Barlow McGhee of Missouri for the second straight time with a 6-4 decision, while Carson upset the No. 3 seed Caden McWhirter of Northern Illinois for the second time as well, his by 2-1 decision.
Both went on to drop their semifinal bouts to the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively, and will continue their days in the consolation semifinals tomorrow.
A trio of wrestlers faced early adversity, but battled back in the consolation brackets to continue their MAC championships. Redshirt junior Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)) and redshirt senior Nick Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) both lost in the quarterfinal round by close decisions to drop into the consolations.
Fellow redshirt senior Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edward) had to wrestle into the quarters, ultimately getting there with a 3-2 revenge win over Muhamed McBryde of Buffalo. He went on to lose in the quarterfinals, placing him in the consolation rounds.
In the consolation bracket, Springer worked his way into the consolation semifinals with a 6-5 decision over Chance Driscol of Kent State. Barber squared off with Colt Cotton of Buffalo, and also came out on top with a 9-4 victory. Davis had the most thrilling match of the three, as he was down early to No. 5 seeded Arsen Ashughyan of Ohio. The savvy veteran was able to overcome though, getting a reversal and turning the Bobcat grappler for a pin.
Finally, a second EMU wreslter, redshirt sophomore Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven), also had to wrestle himself into the bracket, doing just that by winning the pigtail match by a huge 17-2 technical fall. He would go on to drop his next two to No. 1 seed and reigning Olympic Bronze medalist J'Den Cox of Missouri, followed by a tough overtime defeat to No. 4 seeded Austin Severn of CMU to end his run.
Day two of the MAC championships kicks back up tomorrow, March 5, at 1 p.m. inside the McLeod Center. Championship matches will begin at 3 p.m. and will be aired on ESPN3.
