The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team turned in another fantastic preliminary performance at the 2017 Mid-American Conference Championships, Saturday, March 4, qualifying a total of 13 for championship heats.

The session began with the 200 Backstroke, an event the Eagles have seen tremendous success in over the course of the season, including a big point scoring performance in the 100 Back earlier this week. Eastern qualified a total of five for tonight's final heats, including four into the championship race. Freshman Matan Segal posted the top time in prelims, clocking in with a career-best time of 1:44.80. Segal's performance set the program record for fastest time by a freshman in program history. Not far behind Segal, senior Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson) and sophomore Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) claimed second and third, respectively. The 2016 MAC Champion in the 200 Back, Bateman touched in with a time of 1:45.05, while Kawaguchi was just behind him finishing in a career-best 1:45.09. Sophomore Ricky Perez (Greenfield, Wis.-Greenfield) also made the cut for the championship heat, turning in the seventh-ranked prelims time.

As he has done consistently all week, sophomore Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England-Northgate) touched in with one of the top prelim times to earn a lane in the championship heat of the 100 Freestyle. Tyson clocked in with a time of 44.95, the second-fastest in prelims. Freshman Mark Krusinski (Brecksville, Ohio-Brecksville Broadview Heights) will also take part in the evening session after a career-best performance that qualified him for the consolation finals. Krusinski posted a career-best time of 46.20 and enters the race with the 11th-seeded time.

A trio of career performances saw the Eagles land two more in championship heats. Freshman Aaron Hendry (Evans, Ga.-Evans) made the cut for the finals heat with a time of 2:00.98, while redshirt sophomore Lance Bergmann (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) made the cut for the consolation finals with a career-best time 2:01.32.

The Green and White closed out the preliminary session with another outstanding display of depth in the 200 Butterfly. Junior Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory) paved the way for the Eagles, with a career-best 1:46.16 to take the top-ranked time into the championship heat. Freshman Alex Arrieta (Miami, Fla.-Doral Academy Center) and junior Hunter Cook (Hilliard, Ohio-Hilliard Darby) are set to join Burton after career-best performances of their own. Arrieta's time is slotted third, as the Miami, Fla. native clocked in with a career-best time of 1:48.16. Cook also notched a career-best (1:50.22) and edged out senior Marcin Rzyski (Olsztyn, Poland-Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace #4) for the final lane in the championship heat by four hundredths of a second. Rzyski will represent EMU in the consolation final after turning in a time of 1:50.26 in prelims.

The final session of the 2017 MAC Championships will officially begin at 8 p.m., while championship heats for the 1650 Freestyle will get underway slightly earlier.
