LOUISVILLE, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University baseball team had No. 6 University of Louisville on the brink, but ultimately fell in 13 innings, 3-2, Saturday afternoon, March 4, at Jim Patterson Stadium. EMU (2-10) led almost the entire game, but UL (10-0) tied it in the ninth, and won on the walk-off in extra frames.

The pitching was the story of the day for EMU, as junior Brad Allen (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester (Jackson College) took another no decision in what was his best start at EMU yet, going 7.0 innings only giving up one unearned run and striking out a pair. Senior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) pitched a bruising five innings in relief, keeping EMU in it in the extra innings while striking out four.

EMU's offense notched five hits on the afternoon, with the RBI's coming off the bats of redshirt senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) and junior Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern).

The first three innings went by in a flash, with both teams only notching a few runners total. Allen kept the Cardinals hitless the first time through the order, only allowing a pair of runners on walks.

EMU broke the stalemate in the fourth with some two-out hitting. Peterson cranked a double in the right-center gap to place him in scoring position with two away. The next batter, Williams, was there to drive him home on a single up the middle, making it 1-0. Allen gave up his first hit in the bottom of the fourth, but kept UL off the board, keeping it 1-0 into the fifth.

After a scoreless fifth, EMU tallied another run in the sixth. Sophomore Drake Lubin (West Bloomfield, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) smoked a leadoff single, and was advanced to third after a groundout and passed ball. Peterson then laid down a perfect safety squeeze bunt to score the run, making the tally 2-0.

Louisville broke the shutout in the seventh inning, getting an unearned run after a throwing error came around to score. Allen was able to get out of the jam though, maintaining the 2-1 lead with two innings to go.

Delaplane got through the eighth with no trouble, but ran into a heap of it in the ninth. Back-to back singles put runners on the corners with no outs. Another base knock tied it the ballgame, but Delaplane battled back with a couple strikeouts to send the game to extra innings.

Both offenses went cold again as the game got through the 12th with nothing doing on either side. This included Delaplane pitching all three extra frames without surrendering a run. EMU found life again in the 13th, getting runners on second and third with one out after a walk and double from freshman Drake Peggs (Knightstown, Ind.-Knightstown), but UL was able to escape the jam to keep the tie intact.

The Cards finally were able to end the game in the 13th frame when a lead-off hit batsman eventually came around to score on a walk-off sacrifice fly, allowing UL to escape with the 3-2 victory.

The series will conclude tomorrow, March 5, with game three from Jim Patterson Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
