The Eagles grabbed a pair of singles wins in the setback

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's tennis team dropped its second match in a row Friday afternoon, March 31. The Eagles (6-11, 1-2 MAC) fell 5-2 decision to Northern Illinois University. EMU took two singles points but the Huskies (7-10, 1-2) grabbed the doubles point before taking four of the singles matches.

The Eagles dropped the doubles point as Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) dropped the No. 1 doubles match first, 6-1, before Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) and Renu Sharma (Fardabad, India) fell, 6-2, at the No. 3 match, giving the Huskies a quick one point advantage.

In singles play, NIU quickly jumped ahead, 2-0, when Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikani) fell, 6-1, 6-1, to Nothern Illinois' Raven Neely at No. 2 singles, before Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision at No. 6. Martinovska return-fired with a 6-0, 7-5, victory at No. 3, but Veleva dropped her No. 5 singles match, 6-4, 7-5, to secure the win for NIU. Mayerova defeated Adey Osabuohien in a three set comeback, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles to grab the Eagles' second and final point of the match.

"NIU won the close sets that mattered today," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We have to get tougher to be successful. We need to turn around with a better showing on Sunday."
