Eagles Drop Close One at Notre Dame

3/29/2017 6:43:00 PM | Softball

The Eagles return to action this weekend, March 31-April 1, against Akron

NOTRE DAME, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team battled the University of Notre Dame, Wednesday, March 29, at Melissa Cook Stadium in non-conference action. The game stood scoreless through four, before the Fighting Irish (17-13) plated the lone run of the game to clip the Eagles (12-15, 1-2 MAC), 1-0.

Junior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) started the game, going 1.2 innings, before sophomore Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) took over in relief. Miranda went the rest of the way, allowing just one run on one hit, to drop to 3-4 on the season.

Eastern Michigan mustered three hits off a talented Notre Dame pitching staff, as three different Eagles registered base knocks. The Fighting Irish also picked up three hits on the day, including the lone extra base hit of the contest.

Notre Dame threatened in the first after a single, walk, and hit by pitch loaded the bases with two outs, but Trujillo worked her way out of the jam. After a quick chat in the circle with pitching coach Andrea Vangoss, Trujillo got a fly out to end the inning and leave the game scoreless through one.

Junior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) got the Eagles going in the second, drawing a one out walk, but a strikeout ended the scoring chance for the Green and White with two on.

The Fighting Irish came back with a leadoff double, and moved the runner to third on a bunt with one out. A walk put runners on the corners for ND with two outs, while the Eagles elected to make a change in the circle. Trujillo departed as Miranda entered in relief, inheriting a 1-0 count on the batter at the plate. Unfazed by the task at hand, Miranda promptly induced an inning-ending groundout to third to send the game into the third, scoreless.

Wagner registered EMU's first hit of the game with one away in the third, roping a single to right. Junior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) walked to keep the inning going with two outs, but a looping liner to right was caught, stranding a pair of Eagles for the second consecutive frame.

Following a 1-2-3 inning defensively for Miranda and the Eagles, sophomore Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) took a pitch off the arm to leadoff EMU's half of the fourth, but strikeouts once again halted a scoring chance for the Green and White.

Eastern went down in order in the fifth, bringing Notre Dame back to the plate in a hurry. A leadoff four-pitch walk came around to hurt the Eagles, crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly, to give ND a 1-0 edge through five.

A laser off the bat of Olmos opened the sixth. Sophomore Alex Peters (Oscoda, Mich.-Alpena) entered the game as a pinch runner and quickly moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, before back-to-back foul ball fly outs stranded EMU's sixth baserunner of the day.

Miranda kept the Eagles within one with another 1-2-3 frame in the sixth to bring Eastern to the plate for its final at bats. Needing one to tie and facing a 1-0 deficit, the Green and White sent freshman Ariana Chretien (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), senior Katy Wyman (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Portage Central), and sophomore Lucy Lopez (Bakersfield, Calif.-Stockdale) to the plate. After a pair of fly outs in foul territory, Lopez singled to right to turn things over to the top of the order. A well hit ball made things interesting, but Notre Dame's centerfielder made the catch at the warning track to end the game, 1-0, and seal the defeat.

The Eagles return home this weekend, March 31-April 1, as they refocus on Mid-American Conference play when they host the University of Akron in a three-game series. The weekend gets underway Friday, March 31, with a 3 p.m. pitch between the Eagles and Zips.
