EMU were victorious in all but one singles contest

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team picked up its third-straight win Friday afternoon, March 24, when it defeated Bowling Green State University at the Chippewa Racquet Club. The Eagles (6-9, 1-0 MAC) received a free point by default at No. 6 singles, but still took away a 6-1 decision over the Falcons (4-9, 0-1 MAC).

"We played well today," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "BG has some young, talented players. We are getting competitive balance throughout the lineup and that is what it takes to be successful. Consistency moving forward is the key."

In doubles play, the Eagles needed to win just one of their two matches as the No. 3 match was won by default because Bowling Green could only field five student-athletes. Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikani) and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) closed out the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Polina Radeva and Ayumi Sasaki at No. 2 doubles. For good measure, Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) walked away from the No. 1 doubles match with a 6-3 victory.

With a 1-0 lead heading into singles action, the Green and White was awarded another point by default as Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) was given the win at No. 6, extending the EMU advantage to two before the remaining five singles contests began. Mayerova was first to complete her contest, picking up a 6-4, 6-4, win over Paula Comella before Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) grabbed a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles to secure the win for Eastern. With a 4-0 lead, Gogvadze defeated Marharita Tavpash, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 2 to grab the Eagles' fifth point of the match. Ribero dispatched Sasaki at No. 4, 6-4, 6-4, claiming the Green and White's final point of the day.

The Eagles return to action Sunday, March 26, when they travel to the University of Akron. EMU will square off with the Zips at 1 p.m.
