YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team split its Mid-American Conference-opening doubleheader against Kent State University, March 24, at Varsity Field. The Eagles (12-13) used late game heroics to walk-off, 6-5, as victors in game one, before falling, 11-3, in six innings in game two.
Game #1: Eastern Michigan 6, Kent State 5
The Eagles used seven hits, coupled with six KSU miscues, to overcome a five-run deficit in game one. Senior Taylor Wagner (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown) and junior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) stayed hot at the plate, as each of the Eagles went 2-for-4. Wagner came around to score twice, including the game-winning run, while Olmos added a run and the game-winning RBI. Meanwhile, sophomore Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) notched two RBI's.
Eastern needed three pitchers to get things done in the circle in game one, as junior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) got the start. Trujillo tossed 5.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits and striking out two, while senior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) and sophomore Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) made appearances in relief. Miranda was the pitcher of record, earning her third win of the season, pitching 1.0 innings of no-hit ball and striking out one.
Trujillo settled in after surrendering a leadoff single to open the game, keeping the Golden Flashes in check until the fourth. With EMU's bats struggling to piece together much offensively, KSU took advantage. After the Eagles ran themselves out of the third inning, the Golden Flashes plated two in the fourth on a two-run single to grab a 2-0 lead.
Kent State tacked on two more in the fifth, taking advantage of an Eastern miscue. An error and a single put two on with nobody out. Trujillo induced a fly ball to right, where senior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) charged the fly ball. Making the catch, Kriegshauser showed off her arm, gunning out the runner at third on the attempted tag. The non-traditional double play by Kriegshauser saved a run, as the Golden Flashes came through with a two-run home run in the next at bat, doubling their lead to 4-0.
Eastern had another chance to get a run back in the fifth as junior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) drew a leadoff walk. The Eagles moved Hostetler to third on a pair of slow rollers, but a strikeout left the junior just short of the plate.
The Eagles brought in Minsker in the sixth, spelling Trujillo temporarily. Minsker issued two walks and was tagged for a single, making way for Trujillo's re-entry. The Whittier, Calif. Native gave up an RBI single to left, but sophomore Lucy Lopez (Bakersfield, Calif.-Stockdale) came up throwing, getting the Eagles out of the inning with a play at the plate.
Trailing 5-0, the Green and White went to work in the sixth, plating four runs on two hits and five errors. EMU capitalized on a nightmare of an inning for the Flashes, making the most of its extra base runners. Kriegshauser reached on an error before a single by Wagner and another miscue put runners on second and third for Olmos. The Riverside, Calif. native reached on a third error, loading the bases for Logan, who smacked a fly ball deep enough for Kriegshauser to tag from third. Sophomore Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) plated another run with an RBI single, pulling EMU within three, 5-2. Hostetler kept things rolling, reaching on another KSU error, bringing home another run. Then, on a strikeout, the ball slipped to the backstop and EMU was awarded its fourth run of the inning, pulling the Green and White within one, 5-4, ahead of the final inning.
Miranda pitched around a bases loaded jam, getting a strikeout to end KSU's threat and send the Eagles to the plate for their final at bats. A one-out walk by Kriegshauser was followed by a double by Wagner, putting two in scoring position for Olmos. The junior infielder came through in the clutch, laying down a squeeze to even the score at five. Stepping to the plate looking to be the hero, Logan laid down another bunt, this time scoring Wagner from third to give the Eagles the walk-off win, 6-5.
Game #2: Kent State 11, Eastern Michigan 3
The Eagles were outhit 5-4 in the second game of the day, with four different Eagles notching hits. Akles paced the offense, going 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
In the circle, Miranda dropped to 3-3 on the season. The sophomore hurler went 5.1 innings, allowing four hits, and striking out three. EMU's pitching staff gave up a combined seven walks in the loss, coupled with three errors.
Eastern Michigan took advantage of Kent State's first-inning error, plating Kriegshauser on Wagner's sacrifice fly to go up, 1-0, early, but EMU's lead was short lived.
Kent State erased EMU's edge in the third, hammering a grand slam to center to take a 4-1 lead of its own.
The Green and White got two back in the fourth on a base-clearing double by Akles. Olmos' RBI was followed by a double by Logan, setting Akles up for the RBI opportunity. After the two-run knock by Akles, the Eagles stalled, leaving the score 4-3 in favor of KSU.
The score stood into the sixth, where Kent State blew the game open. The Golden Flashes plated seven runs on two hits, two errors, and five walks, to take an 11-3 lead and put the Eagles in danger of being run-ruled.
Coming to the plate in the bottom of the sixth, needing at least one run to keep the game going, the Eagles fell short, going down in order, sealing the 11-3 defeat.
The Eagles and Golden Flashes close out the series tomorrow, March 25, with the series finale at 3 p.m. at Varsity Field. With rain in the forecast, be sure to stay up-to-date with schedule changes via EMUEagles.com.
