Green and White Open Outdoor Season with Day One of Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team opened the outdoor season today, March 24, competing at day one of the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C. The Eagles had a solid day of competition, posting a number of personal-best performances in multiple events.
Junior Leighton Antonio (Hudson, Ohio – Hudson) had an excellent day in the 100m dash, turning in a top-five finish, taking fourth with a time of 10.68 seconds. Freshman Sean Beckom (Saginaw, Mich. – Heritage) finished within the top-20 as well, placing 19th after clocking in at 10.91 seconds.
Moving to the 400m dash, sophomore Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich. – Clinton) was able to snag fifth, clocking in with a personal-best time of 47.94 seconds. In fact, Underwood won his heat, and was just over a second away from a top-three finish.
Two Eagles secured top-20 finishes in the 1500m run, led by redshirt senior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio – Maumee). Fink finished 11th in a race of over 100 runners, crossing the finish line with a personal-best time of 3:47.09. Redshirt junior Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland – Mountain Ridge) had a career race as well, snagging 18th after clocking in with a career-best time of 3:49.19.
The 5000m saw redshirt junior Mitch Lenneman (River Falls, Wis. – River Falls) cross the finish line in 14:31.34, putting him in 47th of 99 finishers. In the 10000m run, fellow redshirt junior Abel Flores (Defiance, Ohio – Defiance) crushed his previous career-best by nearly an entire minute, clocking in at 30:27.54 to take 41st.
In the 1600m sprint medley, the team of Beckom, redshirt seniors Nick James (Troy, Ohio – Troy) and Jason Ervin (Farmington Hills, Mich. – Farmington), and junior Tom Jozwiak (Southgate, Mich. – Thomas J. Anderson) took home fifth, crossing the finish line in 3:30.15, less than a second away from third. The 110m hurdles saw a trio of Eagles compete in the race. Freshman Devonte Findlay (Lauderhill, Fla. – Blanche Ely) had a strong debut race, turning in a 14th-place finish with a time of 14.89 seconds after taking third in his heat.
Competing in the challenging high jump invite, sophomore Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio – Bishop Hartley) walked away in sixth-place, posting a jump of 2.05 meters/ 6 feet 8.75-inches, tying his outdoor career-best. In the pole vault, freshman Colin Etchen (Edgerton, Ohio – Edgerton) finished atop the podium, winning the event with a vault of 4.72 meters/ 15 feet 5.75-inches. Hart also competed in the long jump, securing a seventh-place finish after a mark of 7.04 meters/ 23 feet 1.25-inches.
Transitioning to the throws, redshirt sophomore Zach Purcilly (Troy, Mich. – Avondale) led the Green and White, finishing sixth. Purcilly secured a mark of 15.64 meters/ 51 feet 3.75-inches, which was just .30 meters out of third-place. Freshman Jannik Schmitt (Plymouth, Mich. – Salem) had a solid day as well, nabbing 14th with a toss of 14.55 meters/ 47 feet 9-inches.
Redshirt freshman Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla. – Edmond Memorial) snagged a top-15 finish in the discus throw, as the Edmond, Okla. Native took home 14th-place with a personal-best throw of 44.03 meters/ 144 feet 5-inches. Redshirt sophomore Austin Hazek (Medina, Ohio – Medina) managed to take home 20th, notching a mark of 41.04 meters/ 134 feet 8-inches.
The Green and White wrap up the Raleigh Relays tomorrow, March 25. The day is set to begin at 10 a.m. with the men's javelin throw, while track events will start at 11:45 a.m. with the women's 4x1500m relay.
